General Summary The Fire & Emergency Technology Faculty member serves as an Instructor within the Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs, with primary teaching responsibilities in Basic Firefighter, EMT Basic, and Advanced certification courses. The Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction that supports student success, workforce readiness, and compliance with applicable state and national standards.

In addition to classroom, lab, and field instruction, this position will lead and support discipline-specific curriculum development and continuous improvement efforts for online and hybrid course delivery. The Instructor will collaborate with faculty and program leadership to enhance instructional design, integrate current industry practices, and ensure effective, engaging learning experiences across multiple modalities.

Specific Position Duties

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the teaching field.
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to teach various courses, times, locations, and delivery methods, as needed and as reasonably requested by the college.
  • Utilizes appropriately challenging coursework to help students realize their full potential as learners.
  • Provides students with written expectations (e.g., syllabi, policies, assignment instructions, graded evaluations, etc.).
  • Administers assessments aligned with course objectives, including comprehensive final examinations that evaluate overall student learning outcomes.
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional methods to support student success and engagement.
  • Affirms the worth and dignity of all individuals and supports an inclusive learning environment that promotes equitable access to education.
  • Maintains an appropriate learning and assessment climate in traditional, online, or distance learning environments that encourages the free exchange of ideas while upholding academic integrity and objectivity.
  • Prepares adequately for class and arrives promptly at class meetings, labs, and other scheduled instructional activities.
  • Delivers course material in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Addresses student concerns (e.g., comments, questions, and feedback) in a timely manner through class interaction, office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate means.
  • Effectively manages routine procedures necessary for the successful day-to-day operation of the department, as delegated by the department chair.
  • Submits required reports and schedules to the department chair in a timely manner.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with professional counterparts throughout the college and the community.
  • Provides academic advising to students regarding degree plans and applications to ensure compliance with completion requirements.
  • Assists with recruiting, marketing, and outreach efforts for departmental programs.
  • Actively participates in college functions and events and engages in community service.
  • Adheres to the requirements, standards, and guidelines set forth by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).
  • Oversees coordinator responsibilities and interacts with TCFP as needed.
  • Ensures that all fire training equipment is properly maintained and ready for use in accordance with NFPA standards.
  • Assures the coordination, scheduling, and oversight of skills instructors.
  • Assists with budget planning and resource allocation.
  • Completes other related duties and assigned work hours in accordance with the operational needs of the Fire/EMS departments and distance delivery initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree in discipline or a closely related field.
  • Current certification as a firefighter through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).
  • Hold a TCFP Instructor Level I certificate.
  • Current EMT certification (EMT-Basic or higher).
  • Hold a TDSHS certification as a Licensed Paramedic with field experience.
  • Class B Driver License.
