Fire Inspector - 112

Senior Fire Inspector - 113

Hourly Salary Range:

Fire Inspector: $32.25 - $47.54

Senior Fire Inspector: $34.51 - $50.91

The successful candidate's placement in the salary range will depend upon previous experience in a similar role.

This position is part of a flexible classification. Qualified candidates may be hired at either level based on their experience, education and training as determined by the hiring authority.

DESCRIPTION / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position conducts inspections of buildings and properties to ensure compliance with fire prevention codes, investigates the cause and origin of fires, and inspects new fire protection systems.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts inspections of new and existing buildings, fire protection systems, hazardous material storage, and special events for compliance with fire codes and safety regulations.
  • Assists with investigations related to fires, explosions and hazardous material releases.
  • Reviews, fire alarm and suppression system plans, and permit applications for code compliance.
  • Investigates complaints and fire code violations.
  • Issues notices of violation or citations in accordance with adopted codes and legal requirements.
  • Conducts plan reviews of new construction and tenant improvements.
  • Prepares inspection reports, documentation, and correspondence related to enforcement or correction actions.
  • Represents the department in meetings regarding fire code compliance.
  • May perform responsibilities of a similar nature and level as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

Fire Inspector

One (1) year of experience in fire code enforcement, fire protection system installation, fire protection system inspection/maintenance, fire protection system design or related experience.

Senior Fire Inspector

Two (2) years of combined experience in fire code enforcement and fire cause & origin investigations.

Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant's full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.

Education:

Both Levels

High school diploma or GED.

Professional Licensure and/or Certifications:

Fire Inspector

  • Valid drivers license
  • International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Inspector I certification, obtain within one (1) year of hire.
  • ICC or NFPA Fire Inspector II certification is preferred.

Senior Fire Inspector

  • Valid drivers license
  • International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire Inspector I certification
  • ICC or NFPA Fire Inspector II certification is preferred.
  • Required to complete: National Fire Academy Investigation or International Association of Arson Investigators Fire Investigation (IAAI) I - IV series within two (2) years of hire
