Fire Protection Engineer
Job Description
This role offers the opportunity for a Fire Protection Engineer to support multidisciplinary building projects within an integrated architecture and engineering practice. You will prepare code studies and life safety plans, design fire suppression and fire alarm systems, and perform detailed code analysis and interpretation while working closely with architects and engineers. The position involves evaluating water supplies, reviewing shop drawings, resolving code issues with authorities having jurisdiction, and leading discussions with clients and stakeholders. You will work in a collaborative, design-focused environment that uses Revit, AutoCAD, and advanced modeling tools, with strong potential for growth into client-facing and technical leadership responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed code studies for complex projects and support code studies prepared by project architects on other assignments.
- Develop comprehensive life safety plans for complex projects and assist project architects in preparing life safety plans for additional projects.
- Prepare fire suppression and fire alarm contract documents for complex projects and support plumbing and electrical engineers on other work.
- Assist with building and fire code reviews and interpretations for a variety of project types.
- Assist in site water supply analysis to support fire protection system design.
- Support project architects with egress design, construction type classification, fire and smoke barrier selection, and other critical building attributes related to life safety.
- Evaluate site water supplies for fire suppression system design on complex projects, ensuring adequate capacity and reliability.
- Meet with authorities having jurisdiction, in coordination with project architects, to review and resolve significant code issues.
- Integrate fire protection systems with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines to achieve coordinated designs.
- Review sprinkler and fire alarm system shop drawings to verify conformance with design intent and applicable codes and standards.
- Assist with performance of and reporting on CFD fire modeling and egress modeling using specialized software tools.
- Lead meetings with clients, code officials, and other project stakeholders to negotiate and resolve fire protection and life safety code issues.
- Travel regionally, nationally, and internationally as needed to support project requirements.
- Perform other related duties as requested or required to support project and team needs.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or a clearly defined path to licensure.
- Minimum of 5 years of post-graduate experience in fire protection engineering or closely related work.
- Proven experience with building fire protection systems design, including fire suppression and fire alarm systems.
- Experience working with ICC building and fire codes and related model codes.
- Strong technical and analytical skills applied to code analysis, system design, and performance-based solutions.
- Ability to work effectively across disciplines and communicate clearly with architects, engineers, clients, and code officials.
- Hands-on experience with Revit and AutoCAD for building systems and fire protection design.
- Demonstrated capability in building fire systems design and fire protection design, including fire suppression system design and fire alarm design.
- Experience with code analysis, code consulting, and code review in the context of building and fire safety.
- Ability to coordinate with authorities having jurisdiction and participate in discussions to resolve code-related issues.
- Familiarity with site water supply analysis to support fire suppression system design.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with advanced fire and life safety modeling tools such as CFD fire modeling, FDS, PyroSim, Pathfinder, and egress modeling.
- Exposure to smoke control design and structural fire analysis for performance-based fire engineering solutions.
- Experience integrating fire protection systems with building systems, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines.
- Experience in AHJ coordination and shop drawing review for sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
- Experience working on diverse and complex building projects such as commercial and institutional facilities.
- Interest in and aptitude for client-facing responsibilities and technical leadership as career growth opportunities.
- Comfort working in a hybrid environment with both design and code consulting responsibilities, rather than solely production work.
