    Advertising Summary: The Fire Protection Lieutenant staffs fire apparatus assigned to NMSU, including ambulances and special event teams. This position supervises the assigned crew and coordinates daily activities with the Shift Captain. NMSU Fire Department is a district of Dona Ana County Fire Rescue and operates within the policies, protocols, SOGs and operational directives of both organizations.

    Bargaining Unit Announcement: This is a bargaining unit position with American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

    Contingent Upon Funding: Contingent upon external funding

    Standard Work Schedule: Shift: Other Shift

    If Not a Standard Work Schedule: 3-shift model

     

    Job Duties and Responsibilities: Responds to and directs fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical, and hazardous incident operations. Leads on-scene tactical response for assigned personnel, ensuring safe and effective incident management. Supervises daily firehouse operations, personnel readiness, training, equipment maintenance, and compliance with departmental policies. Coordinates emergency response activities, mentors and develops firefighters, and supports operational planning and community risk reduction initiatives.

     

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience: 
    High School Diploma or GED certificate + 3 years of relevant experience.

    Equivalent Qualifications: 

    Preferred Qualifications: 

    Special Certification/Licensure: 
    New Mexico EMT-Basic or National Registry EMT-Basic License or higher [with the ability to obtain New Mexico license within three (3) months of hire]. Valid driver's license with ability to obtain a NM class E driver's license within one (1) month of hire. IFSAC certified Firefighter I and II or equivalent. Must obtain IFSAC Officer I or equivalent certification within one year of hire and New Mexico EMT-Intermediate license within 18 months of hire.

     

    Working Conditions and Physical Effort

    Environment: Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

    Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.

    Lifting Requirements: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.

    Risk: Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
