The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office promotes environmental, health, and safety compliance within the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus community. The University is committed to the protection of the environment, and safety on the job is everyone's responsibility. The EHS office provides guidance at all levels of the University to ensure compliance, maintain a safe workplace, and to protect the environment.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to administer and monitor the University's environmental, health, and safety program; inspect facilities; enforce safety regulations; emergency planning; investigation; conduct assessments; and work with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of the campus community.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
- Assist with the development of campus environmental, health, and safety programs, including Emergency Preparedness/Building Evacuation Plans, Fire Prevention, Aerial Lifts, Forklifts, Automated External Defibrillators, Hot Work, and Event Safety.
- Administer and monitor the Emergency Preparedness/Building Evacuation Plans, Fire Prevention, Aerial Lifts, Forklifts, Automated External Defibrillators, Hot Work, and Event Safety programs.
- Maintain detailed records of inspections and incidents. Conduct training sessions; construction plan reviews, occupancy and event safety consultations, inspect facilities; enforce safety regulations; emergency planning; conduct investigations, assessments, and work with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of the campus community. Serve as the primary contact for the fire department and the State Fire Marshal.
- Coordinates inspections of fire suppression systems, including fire pumps, alarm systems, detectors, extinguishers, hydrants, standpipes, sprinkler systems, and other fire safety devices, and oversees repairs.
- Develop building evacuation plans and conduct fire drills.
- Identify fire and life hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Investigate safety concerns and assist with the development of corrective action measures.
- Process and monitor hot work and event permits.
- Inspect University facilities, equipment, and employee work practices for conformance with regulatory standards.
- Analyze program performance and implement continuous improvement strategies.
- Build relationships and serve as a liaison with federal, state, and local authorities in matters related to environmental, health, and safety.
- Deliver various environmental, health, and safety training programs.
- Provide consultative safety services and respond to environmental, health, and safety service requests and emergency incidents.
- Write reports and communicate results effectively.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in a fire science, fire protection management, fire prevention, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Degree in fire science, fire protection management, fire prevention, safety and health, engineering, risk management, or other related technical fields, or business
- 1-3 years of environmental health, safety, or fire experience
- Detailed working knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations, building fire protection equipment, evacuation plans, evacuation drills, hot work, automated external defibrillators, and event safety.
- Familiarity with NFPA, NCFC, etc.
- Experience with developing and delivering training programs.
- Experience working in a university, college, or public sector environment.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in interpreting and applying policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Demonstrated experience with fire protection equipment and new technology systems for inspections, training, or compliance tracking.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building equipment (e.g., fire sprinklers, hydrants, fire suppression, HVAC, and electrical).
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
