SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, responsible for front line fire, EMS, rescue, hazardous materials and support operations demonstrating knowledge of departmental policies, procedures and EMS protocols. Maintains emergency vehicles and facilities. Provides related training to public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs fire, rescue and emergency medical services by: responding to fire alarms and other emergency calls; identifying dangerous building conditions created by fire or other causes; positioning and climbing ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning structures; creating openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance; and protecting property from water and smoke damage.
• Conducts information and education programs for the public.
• Administers emergency medical care to the sick and injured. Respond to emergencies including minor illnesses, sudden illnesses, and casualties arising from a multitude of emergencies such as assessing the condition of patients that are injured or suffering from acute/ chronic illness, providing an immediate course of treatment based on the fire department's medical protocols.
• Maintains apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, and grounds.
• Participates in drills, demonstrations, and professional courses.
• Participates in pre-fire planning.
• Drives and operates emergency vehicles and equipment.
• Serves in a higher capacity when directed to do so.
• Maintains a level of physical fitness consistent with job duties and in compliance with department policies.
• Maintains current knowledge of response districts including all streets, block splits, hydrant locations, Fire Department Connections and Knox Box locations, and Fire Protection Systems in the City of Bedford.
• May perform other assignments and handle special projects, as directed.
• Regular and timely attendance required, as well as, the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of fire hydraulics. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

• TCFP Basic Firefighter certificate
• TDSHS Paramedic certificate or license
• Class B Texas driver's license

SPECIALIZED KSA'S

Demonstrated knowledge of pump operations, all emergency vehicles and equipment carried on emergency vehicles, fire and rescue practices, hazardous materials, fire prevention and emergency medical care appropriate to certification level. Working knowledge of fire ground tool and extrication equipment.

Working knowledge of use and application of computer software relevant to this position. Must be physically able to complete operational tasks.

Works in emergency conditions that may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions to include but not limited to flames, smoke, hazardous materials, cramped conditions, charged or oxygen deficient atmospheres, downed power lines, victims with severe injuries/death and inclement weather. Must be able to wear all assigned bunker gear and safety equipment and perform related emergency scene duties effectively and efficiently. Be able to frequently lift and carry heavy weights, climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, pull, jump, grasp hoses, grasp and manipulate small objects, work on unsteady footing and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required. Possess ability to use basic swimming techniques for water rescues. Possess good vision and hearing and be able to distinguish colors and odors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may become intense on emergency response.

Employee must be able to complete job tasks in small or confined spaces. Work in zero visibility or black out conditions.
