  • Firefighter-Paramedic (40-hour week) $44.4853 - $56.7754 per hour
  • Firefighter-Paramedic (56-hour week) $31.7752 - $40.5540 per hour

About the Opportunity

The City of Ventura is seeking certified Lateral Firefighter-Paramedics to join our Fire Department. In this role, you will be assigned to an engine company, delivering emergency medical services and performing a wide range of fire service duties, including fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, station and equipment maintenance, fire prevention, and public education. This is a shift-based position requiring availability on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver emergency medical services in compliance with Ventura County EMS protocols, including assessing injuries, administering first aid, providing oxygen and life support, transporting patients to medical facilities, and operating resuscitation and other emergency equipment.
  • Train staff on basic and advanced lifesaving techniques.
  • Respond to fires, rescue emergencies, medical alarms, and public service calls; operate fire hoses and nozzles, engine pumping equipment, and ladders.
  • Maintain and repair fire stations and equipment; participate in fire drills, exercises, and public education programs.

Minimum Qualifications – Required

Experience

A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to one year of full-time firefighting experience with a comparable fire agency and possession of required license and certifications.

Age  

Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of application.

Citizenship

Applicants must be United States citizens or show proof of applying for citizenship at least one year prior to application.

Education

High School graduate or G.E.D. is required.

Background Check

Applicants required to undergo a comprehensive background investigation.

Physical Requirements  

Must be physically capable of performing all tasks required of a Ventura Firefighter-Paramedic including rigorous activities associated with emergency operations, and meet California Department of Motor Vehicle visual acuity standards necessary to maintain required licenses.  Fitness will initially be determined by possession of a Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) certificate, and ability to pass a medical evaluation.

The following certifications are required upon employment:

  • Possession of a current and valid California Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record. 
  • A current California Paramedic license (EMT-P) AND a current CPR certification.
  • A current and valid Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) certification OR Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Providers (PEPP) must be maintained continuously while employed as a Trainee or Firefighter Paramedic.
  • A current and valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification must be maintained continuously while employed as a Trainee or Firefighter Paramedic.
  • Possession of Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) certificate.

Incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter, maintain the following licenses:

  • A Ventura County Paramedic Level II certification.  Employees must maintain a valid Level II certification as long as the department employs them in the Firefighter Paramedic classification.
  • A current and valid California Class C driver's license with a Firefighter endorsement.

This is the fully trained journey-level class. Incumbents are appointed to this classification following successful completion of a one-year probationary period at the Firefighter-Trainee-Paramedic level, or at the discretion of the City, individual's possessing a current California Paramedic License with at least one year as a full-time Firefighter may be hired directly at this level and serve a one-year probationary period.
