Job Description

Join our team as a Firefighter Recruit with the City of Raleigh! This is an entry-level position involving development of skills, knowledge, and abilities related to protection of life and property through firefighting and providing emergency medical treatment to the sick and injured. Candidates must successfully complete the Fire Academy, including becoming state certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Receives training and instruction in firefighting, rescue techniques, emergency medical procedures and medical lifesaving, handling of hazardous materials
  • Attends classes, completes physical training, and gains knowledge of equipment and equipment operations, rescue materials and supplies
  • Observes professional firefighter duties in the performance of firefighting and the provision of emergency medical services. Attends emergency events to increase knowledge of related duties.
  • Learns and maintains knowledge of department standards, policies and procedures

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; no previous experience required

Licensing, Certifications, and other Requirements:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C drivers license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Age 18 on or before July 31, 2026
  • Vision corrected to 20/30 in each eye

If you are applying for the Short Academy, the following is also required:

  • Emergency Medical Technician (NC-EMT, NR-EMT, or other state qualified EMT) certification

Work Environment and Physical Effort:

Heavy: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:

Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic) in or around vehicles. Employees may occasionally work in or around construction sites, confined spaces, warehouse, and shop environments.

Work Exposures:

There is frequent exposure to communicable diseases, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, and loud noises. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate, individuals with known violent backgrounds, and be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees) or extreme heat (above 100 degrees.).
