About the Role

iApartments is looking for a passionate Firmware Engineer I to join the Product and Engineering team, helping develop and support our smart home solution in the multifamily space. This early-career role contributes to the design, implementation, testing, and maintenance of embedded systems that directly affect the experience of our customers and residents.

\n
You'll work alongside a diverse engineering team to solve complex technical problems, evaluate new technologies, and improve product reliability. The ideal candidate is motivated to learn quickly, approaches troubleshooting methodically, and advocates for a high-quality end-user experience.

This is a full time position that is expected to work in a hybrid role out of our Tampa office at least 3 days a week. This role will report directly to our Director of Engineering and work closely with our hardware, cloud, and mobile teams to bring high quality products and services to our customers.

What You'll Do
\n
\n
Firmware Development
\n
- \n
- Develop and maintain embedded firmware in C and C++
- \n
- Maintain MQTT messaging and cloud-connected device functionality
- \n
- Assist with Wi-Fi, LTE, BLE, and Z-Wave integrations
- \n
- Assist with evaluating development boards, microcontrollers, and other hardware components
- \n
- Read and review circuit schematics to support development and troubleshooting
- \n
\n
\n
Testing & Troubleshooting
\n
- \n
- Develop and execute unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop tests
- \n
- Diagnose issues involving UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, device registers, sensors, relays, and bootloaders
- \n
- Investigate field issues using logs, serial debugging, JTAG/SWD, and fleet diagnostic tools
- \n
- Perform root-cause analysis to isolate and resolve hardware, firmware, connectivity, and system-level issues
- \n
- Maintain Python utilities for device testing, commissioning, monitoring, and firmware rollout
- \n

Collaboration & Documentation
\n
- \n
- Document designs, protocols, test results, and troubleshooting procedures
- \n
- Participate in code reviews and maintain source code and technical documentation in version control
- \n
- Collaborate with hardware, cloud, mobile, QA, product, and support teams
- \n
- Advocate for the end user by identifying opportunities to improve product quality, reliability, and usability
- \n
\n
\n
What We're Looking For
\n
\n
- \n
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- \n
- Foundational knowledge of embedded C
- \n
- Understanding of microcontrollers, interrupts, memory constraints, device registers, and hardware peripherals
- \n
- Experience with at least one embedded development project, professional or academic
- \n
- Familiarity with serial protocols such as UART, I2C, or SPI
- \n
- Basic experience with Git and software debugging
- \n
- Ability to read technical documentation and hardware schematics
- \n
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills
- \n
- Ability to learn new technologies and collaborate across multiple teams and projects
- \n
\n
\n
Nice to Have

Experience with one or more of the following is helpful but not required:

- ARM-based microcontrollers and programming
- \n
- Embedded cross-compilation toolchains including Linux-based operating systems and embedded RTOSs
- \n
- Keil, ST-Link, J-Link, GDB, or similar debugging tools
- \n
- IoT frameworks and protocols, including MQTT, TLS, AWS IoT, or JSON-based device APIs
- \n
- RF and wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, BLE, LTE Cat-M1/Cat-1, Z-Wave, Zigbee, or NB-IoT
- \n
- OTA systems, bootloaders, flash partitions, or firmware security
- \n
- Python and pytest
- \n
- Unity/CMock embedded unit testing
- \n
- Circuit schematic design or review
- \n
- HVAC systems, thermostat controls, smart locks, or building automation

- Jira and Scrum/Agile development practices
