Job Description and Duties

Are you interested in beginning your career as a wildlife management professional? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is now hiring Seasonal Aide positions to assist in the operation and management of the 9,600-acre Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area. With this exciting opportunity, incumbents will work at a hunter check station during waterfowl season (October - February), where you will be processing hunters on and off 3 units that make up the wildlife area. This includes preparing check stations for hunting season, posting signs, checking hunting license, collecting daily fees, recording hunter numbers, and collecting harvest data. Performing this job will improve your bird identification skills by learning the various waterfowl species harvested by the hunting public. During the non-hunting season, you will be trained to perform the service and routine maintenance of equipment used on the wildlife area and then use that equipment for planting and fertilizing fields, mowing roads, or disking fields. Alongside permanent personnel, you will gain skills and abilities replacing water control structures, building maintenance, and repairing wildlife area structures as needed. You will be asked to perform general maintenance throughout the wildlife area, the office, and check stations, including trash pickup. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience, beginning your career as a wildlife professional.

Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist a (Supervisory), the incumbent will conduct a wide variety of tasks within the wildlife area, including working in a hunt check station, interacting with the public, and maintaining public use facilities in a sanitary and safe condition for both the public and employees.

The Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aid classification is a non-testing classification.
