Overview:
The Fitness Assistant understands the importance of cleanliness and order in all Health and Wellness spaces in order to provide a high end and safe experience for our members at the YMCA of Springfield. The Fitness Assistant is responsible for the general upkeep in the department spaces and is capable of answering general questions regarding Health & Wellness programming and use of equipment. The Fitness Assistant is capable of performing Youth and Adult Fitness Machine Orientations for new members and promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Fitness Assistant is responsible for scheduling maintenance for non-functioning machines and pairing members with personal trainers.
Responsibilities:
- Clean all surfaces on machines with provided cleaning solution.
- Vacuum around and under machines, free weights, equipment in Group Fitness Studios and Y-Perform.
- Dust and wipe down all surfaces in the all Health and Wellness spaces.
- Refill wipe containers in Fitness Centers, Group Fitness Studios and Y-Perform.
- Perform light maintenance such as but not limited to, restart/test of cardio and strength equipment.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and determine if a maintenance call is needed.
- Schedule maintenance on non-functioning equipment in a timely manner.
- Re-rack weights properly, re-arrange weights properly and put equipment back in proper storage.
- Schedule and perform fitness machine orientations for new members.
- Schedule and perform youth fitness machine orientations for ages 9-12.
- Coordinate each first-time scheduling of program sessions for members and program participants. Connect and pair clients with coaches and trainers and ensure the client contact information in DAXKO (software operating program) is correct.
- Administrative support to ensure efficient operation of the Fitness & Wellness Department. Support the Fitness & Wellness Director through a variety of tasks related to organization and communication.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.

Child Abuse Policies & Prevention: The YMCA enforces policies to prevent child abuse. Allegations or suspicions are taken seriously and reported to authorities. Procedures include unscheduled visits, open doors for parents, and a code of conduct for staff. We screen carefully to prevent abusers from being hired and provide child abuse prevention training to staff. Employees who fail to support these policies will be subject to discipline, up to termination.
Qualifications:

- Self-motivated to serve members, guests, and staff.
- Must be at least 16.
- At least one year of exercise experience.
- Ability to learn quickly.
- Ability to work with integrity, discretion, and a professional approach.
- Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
- Basic knowledge or experience in wellness or fitness is helpful.
- Must be data centered, detail oriented, and be able to multi-task.
- Knowledgeable about office processes and procedures.
- Comfortable with data entry, computer functions, and phone call follow ups.
- Skill, ability, and knowledge to complete trainings and general requirements within orientation period, 7 – 90 days.
- Ability to complete all required trainings within 60 days of employment, including but not limited to CPR, first aid, Living Our Cause, DCFS Mandated Report, and to maintain these certifications as current as outlined by regulations or requirements.

- May require physical effort while reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, balancing, bending, leaning, kneeling, walking and climbing.
- Specifically,
- Walking up and down stairs multiple times a day, standing, walking, leaning, kneeling, and bending.
- Racking weights, moving chairs for classes, normally to high lifting up to 70 lbs.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
