Job Description: Fitting up structural components from blueprints and drawings. Must be able to pass a written Fitter Test and 1G on Metal Core and 3G on Flux weld test.
Structural fitter-welder lays out, positions, aligns, and fits fabricated metal parts (I-beams, plates) according to blueprints, subsequently welding them into structural assemblies like bridges or ship hulls. They utilize tools such as jacks, grinders, and torches for precise alignment, usually performing FCAW or MIG welding on heavy steel.
Key Responsibilities
Blueprint Interpretation: Study engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to determine layout and material requirements.
Fabrication and Fitting: Align, clamp, and fit structural components (angles, beams, plates) for welding using cranes, jacks, and wedges.
Welding: Perform structural welding (FCAW, MIG, SMAW) to secure components, often working with heavy plates and multi-pass welding.
Layout & Inspection: Mark reference points and measure components to check for accuracy against specifications.
Cutting/Prep: Cut, bend, and grind metal using torches and grinders to prepare joints, including back gouging or air arcing.
Safety Compliance: Maintain a safe, clean work area and follow all safety regulations (PPE)
