POSITION SUMMARY

The Fixed Asset Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate records of the company's fixed assets, capital projects, and depreciation schedules in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), utility industry regulations, and Sarbanes-Oxley internal controls. This position supports financial reporting, budgeting, audits, and capital improvement tracking for water and wastewater infrastructure assets.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain and reconcile fixed asset records, including additions, disposals, transfers, retirements, and depreciation
• Track and monitor capital project costs including Allowance for Funds Used During Construction (AFUDC) for water and wastewater infrastructure projects
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries related to fixed assets, contributed property, percent complete, AFUDC and depreciation
• Reconcile fixed asset subledger to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies
• Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, reports, and documentation related to fixed assets and capital expenditures
• Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Purchasing, and Finance departments to ensure accurate project cost tracking and asset classification
• Review invoices and project expenditures to determine proper capitalization or expense treatment
• Monitor retirement assets and disposals to ensure proper accounting treatment and recordkeeping
• Assist with regulated utility, financial and tax reporting
• Maintain fixed asset policies and procedures for SOX compliance
• Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance fixed asset accounting accuracy and efficiency
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related
• Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience
• Knowledge of GAAP and fixed asset accounting principles
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with attention to detail
• Strong communication and collaboration skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Fixed asset or utility accounting experience
• Experience in the water, wastewater, utility, or public infrastructure industry
• Familiarity with capital project accounting and construction accounting
• Experience with Peoplesoft financials a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Sedentary:

• Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer

• May involve walking or standing for brief periods of time

• Exerting up to 10lbs of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Primarily office-based work environment
• May require extended hours during audits, month-end close, or year-end reporting periods
