    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor oversees hands-on mechanical work and supervises other mechanics to keep the Cambridge Police Department''''s vehicle fleet operational and safe. Reporting to the Fleet Manager, the role manages fleet maintenance program administration, ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, and City and state regulations, schedules and prioritizes vehicle repairs, coordinates vendors, and serves as the point of contact during emergencies.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

    • Serve as a working mechanic within the Police Department''''s Vehicle Maintenance Department; diagnose fleet vehicle issues, perform automotive repairs, and direct the activities of other police mechanics, mechanic helpers, and interns in maintaining and repairing all department vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment.
    • Follow the Fleet Manager''''s maintenance program for all vehicles and related equipment, including routine and preventive tasks such as scheduled inspections, lubrication, tune-ups, and component replacements.
    • In the Fleet Manager''''s absence, review all vehicle inspection reports and schedule work by priority; assist with supervisory duties and serve as the point of contact when the Fleet Manager is not reachable.
    • Communicate with service vendors, order and receive parts and supplies, inspect the quality of outside repairs and procured inventory, and transport vehicles to and from service locations as needed.
    • Submit and prioritize work orders in the CPD vehicle maintenance system, review weekly open items, and ensure safe facility operations including snow removal and maintaining clear hallways and egress per City regulations.
    • Perform administrative duties, managing environmental requirements for operating a fleet maintenance facility in accordance with OSHA, EPA, and City and state regulations.
    • Ensure daily inspections are completed to confirm all fleet vehicles are safe for operation, identify conditions requiring remediation, manage equipment and fixed-asset inventory, and maintain and stock parts and supplies.
    • Work with Shift Commanders and Command Staff to coordinate and schedule expedited repairs for the marked and unmarked fleet and address other fleet-related issues.
    • Coordinate resources for snow emergencies, special events, and other incidents, providing coverage and support as needed.
    • Perform other related duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Experience

    • Trade certifications and five (5) to eight (8) years of progressive, hands-on experience in fleet or automotive maintenance; ASE membership or certifications a plus.
    • At least five (5) years of experience supervising personnel required.
    • Valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator''''s License required; Class D/M preferred.
    • Ability to work and interact effectively with individuals and groups across diverse identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.
    • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to OSHA and the EPA and of the principles and practices of effective fleet management.
    • Ability to demonstrate general knowledge of police operations and public safety vehicles.
    • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Project.
    • Ability to work with management to develop and implement strategic planning for fleet maintenance, equipment, and green initiatives.
    • Ability to develop and implement plans that minimize impact on day-to-day operations of the fleet maintenance unit.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with excellent leadership, time-management, and organizational skills.
    • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to find creative solutions.
    • Ability to set priorities and make appropriate decisions on repairs or assignments contingent on the availability of parts and manpower.
    • Knowledge of public bidding laws preferred.
    • Willingness to respond day or night to ensure continuous operations, self-motivation, and ability to lead.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

    Works under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager or designee, receiving broad direction and exercising considerable independent judgment to prioritize, coordinate, and carry out fleet maintenance and emergency response activities.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

    Provides day-to-day supervision and technical guidance to fleet mechanics, garage staff, and contracted vendors; assigns work priorities, inspects completed repairs, and enforces safety and regulatory compliance.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed primarily in a garage environment with fluorescent lighting and includes meetings in other offices or facilities. The position may be required to respond to or support off‑hour emergency situations.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Requires the ability to use office equipment and travel to meetings at various locations in and around Cambridge. Work involves vehicle repair, frequent site checks, and driving, walking, bending, squatting, reaching, and stretching, with lifting of at least 50 pounds required and more strenuous activity possible depending on the situation.
