Description

The City of Northglenn is seeking a highly motivated and outgoing Fleet Mechanic I or II.

Fleet Mechanic I - HIRING RANGE: $25.22 - $29.00 / HOUR Fleet Mechanic II - HIRING RANGE: $26.58 - $31.90 / HOUR

Position Highlights

The Fleet Mechanic I performs skilled entry-level inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment. This position requires basic mechanical knowledge, problem-solving ability, and basic skills using available materials and tools. Work is performed under general supervision with significant independent judgment, and results are reviewed through completed work performance.

The Fleet Mechanic II is a skilled and motivated member of the Citys Fleet Division, responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, preventative maintenance, and repair of the Citys gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, heavy equipment, and small motors to ensure safe and reliable fleet operations. This position involves performing journeyman-level mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic repairs on equipment while complying with all City policies and safety regulations. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who works effectively with minimal supervision, possesses strong problem-solving and fabrication skills, and demonstrates solid technical knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment repair.

Duties and Responsibilities

FLEET MECHANIC I:

  • Ability to diagnose basic mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment under supervision.
  • Performs minor and major repair work on light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including automated refuse trucks, backhoes, wheel loaders, and other large and small equipment.
  • Ability to repair and replacement of components such as brakes, steering parts, batteries, belts, hoses, and suspension components under supervision with training.
  • Changes tires on small and large equipment with guidance as needed.
  • Ability to reliably perform routine preventative maintenance services such as oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and lubrication with training.
  • Learns and assists with vehicle emission testing and related documentation.
  • Learns and assists with badging, outfitting, and setup of new vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to perform basic vehicle and equipment inspections to identify visible mechanical deficiencies and reports findings to lead mechanics or supervisors.
  • Learns and assists with fabrication, modification, and repair of parts using shop tools and available materials.
  • Works as part of a team and follows instructions while developing independent work skills.
  • Maintains accurate records of maintenance and repair activities on work orders under supervision.

Equipment Operation (Fleet Mechanic I):

  • Safely operates and services a variety of vehicles and equipment under supervision including but not limited to:
  • Automated Refuse Trash Trucks
  • Backhoes
  • Wheel Loaders
  • Light- and Heavy-Duty Gasoline and Diesel-Powered Vehicles
  • Small Engine and Motorized Equipment
  • Uses shop equipment and basic diagnostic equipment such as lifts, welders, hydraulic presses, scanners, compressors, and hand/power tools under guidance and in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Test-drives vehicles and equipment to verify basic repairs and ensure proper operation.
  • Learns to recognize safety hazards or operational deficiencies and reports concerns to supervisor.
  • Reports mechanical issues to supervisor and assists with basic repair planning and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Operates equipment safely in shop and field conditions in accordance with City and OSHA safety regulations.

FLEET MECHANIC II:

  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic problems on gasoline and diesel-powered engines, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Performs minor and major repair work on light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including automated refuse trucks, backhoes, wheel loaders, and other large and small equipment.
  • Repairs and rebuilds components such as transmissions, engines, braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to independently change tires for small and large equipment.
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on gasoline engines, diesel engines, and small motors to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Performs emission testing on vehicles.
  • Ability to independently badge and outfit new vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts thorough inspections to identify mechanical deficiencies and determine appropriate repair procedures.
  • Utilizes journeyman-level skills to fabricate, modify, and repair parts using available materials, tools, and supplies.

Education and Experience

FLEET MECHANIC I:

  • Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Technical automotive coursework, vocational training, or related certification is preferred.
  • Four (4) to five (5) years of diversified experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, and major repair of a variety of light- and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, preferred.
  • Basic knowledge servicing engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems preferred.
  • Entry level experience working with heavy equipment such as automated refuse trucks, backhoes, and wheel loaders preferred.
  • Certifications:
  • Valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • Clean driving record and ability to pass a DOT physical and drug test.
  • Air Brake Certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • A/C Recycle & Recovery Certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • State of Colorado Diesel Emissions Certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification preferred.

FLEET MECHANIC II:

  • Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of diversified experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, and major repair of a variety of light- and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Experience servicing engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience working with heavy equipment such as automated refuse trucks, backhoes, and wheel loaders preferred.
  • Certifications:
  • Valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • Clean driving record and ability to pass a DOT physical and drug test.
  • Air Brake Certification within six (6) months of employment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in both indoor shop and outdoor environments and may be subject to extreme weather conditions at times.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Physical demands include prolonged standing or sitting, lifting and carrying materials and equipment, bending, stooping, kneeling, and performing repetitive motions.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, hazardous materials, noise, vibration, and varying temperatures is expected.
  • Must be available for emergency call-outs, including responding to repairs or breakdowns outside of normal work hours, as part of an on-call rotation.

DESCRIPTION & BENEFITS

  • Regular Full-Time: Employee works in a position that is classified as 40 hours per week. Eligible for full benefit package including medical, dental, life and LTD insurance; pension and general leave and optional benefits.
  • Regular Part-Time 30+: Employee works in a position that is classified as 30+ hours per week. City pays contribution toward employee only medical and dental insurance. Employee can pay the difference to cover spouse and/or children. Life & LTD insurance coverage is provided. Employee participates in the Citys pension plan and the City contributes to the plan. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and optional benefits.
  • Regular Part-Time 20+: Employee works in a position that is classified as 20+ hours per week but less than 30 hours. City pays contribution toward employee only medical insurance. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and the City pays 3.75% toward deferred compensation and optional benefits.
  • Regular Part-Time (less than 20 hours/wk): Employee works in a position that is classified as less than 20 hours per week. Employee accrues general leave on a pro-rated basis and the City pays 3.75% toward deferred compensation.
