Summary
Primary responsibilities are to assist the Fleet Services Manager with the maintenance and repair of approximately 250 Lubbock County vehicles. Ensuring all work performed by inmates is inspected & correct; eliminating any possibility of faulty workmanship. Enter and maintain records related to vehicle maintenance and inspections, accurately entering data in to a computer. Supervision of Working Inmates, very frequent to near constant oversight of mechanical work being performed. Additionally, teaching new skills, encouragement, and integrity through motivation, mentoring, monitoring and coaching to reduce recidivism.
Work involves performing complex and technically advanced automotive repairs; verifying effectiveness of work through test driving vehicles; and work closely with the Fleet Services Manager to schedule and coordinate repairs that require expertise. Work is performed under moderate supervision with extensive latitude for the exercise of technical judgment within the limits of generally accepted automotive maintenance practices, agency policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent (GED). Plus some training or courses in automotive repair at a college or Trade School.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience - Three or more years of extensive progressively responsible work experience in repairing and maintaining automotive vehicles is desired. Alternate experience will be evaluated and considered.
Knowledge of agency rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Automotive knowledge - Functions, interactions, and proper operation of all automotive systems (electrical, ignition, engine, power train, brakes, transmission, etc.) and of the tools, equipment, procedures and methods applicable to diagnosing, repairing and testing corrections to malfunctions. Read and understand automotive repair manuals. Assist inmates in diagnosing and repairing malfunctioning vehicles.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The working environment will include, but is not limited to the following; Indoors, outdoors, In vehicle, wind, rain, sleet, snow, hail and temperatures ranging from below 0 degrees to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Driving requirements for this position: moderate-frequency, very complex when called out to extract vehicles from mud and/or snow, tire changing and roadside repairing.
