Position Summary
Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, the Fleet Mechanic performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of company automobiles, trucks, trailers, refrigeration units, and related fleet equipment.
The position is responsible for maintaining company vehicles and equipment in safe and reliable operating condition. Work primarily involves preventive maintenance and general mechanical troubleshooting, but may also include component replacement, electrical repairs, brake repairs, refrigeration equipment, lift gates, tires, and collision-related repairs.

- Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Friday, 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Overtime or schedule adjustments may be required based on business needs.
What You Will Be Doing
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair assigned company vehicles and fleet equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections, repairs, adjustments, and modifications on automobiles, trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
- Assist the Lead Fleet Mechanic and Fleet Manager with repair projects and fleet maintenance priorities.
- Read and interpret service information, maintenance instructions, technical manuals, diagnostic information, and repair procedures.
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain refrigeration units, vehicle bodies, and lift gates.
- Troubleshoot vehicle computer, electronic, electrical, and lighting systems.
- Test, repair, rebuild, replace, or calibrate fuel system components as required.
- Inspect, repair, and adjust torsion arms, landing gear, and related trailer components.
- Inspect, repair, and overhaul vehicle brake systems and related components.
- Inspect, repair, replace, and service damaged or worn tires as required.
- Perform general mechanical repairs and component replacement necessary to maintain safe and reliable fleet operation.
- Assist with collision-related vehicle repairs when required.
- Wash, fuel, and prepare vehicles or equipment as requested.
- Complete required vehicle write-ups, work orders, repair documentation, time records, and other fleet maintenance records accurately and timely.
- Communicate professionally with Fleet leadership, drivers, employees, vendors, and other departments regarding vehicle repairs, maintenance status, and shop operations.
- Assist with determining repair priorities based on vehicle condition, operational needs, safety, and fleet availability.
- Assist with maintaining documentation required for applicable local, state, federal, and company fleet requirements as assigned.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop and work area.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, spills, mechanical hazards, or other safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor or Safety representative.
- Handle automotive fluids, chemicals, batteries, oils, fuels, and other shop materials in accordance with applicable training, safety procedures, and company requirements.
- Comply with applicable federal and state safety regulations, environmental requirements, and company safety procedures, including requirements for the proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Perform other duties as assigned, delegated, or required to support Fleet operations.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- One-year certificate from a college, vocational, or technical school; three to six months of related automotive, diesel, fleet, or mechanical experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing automobiles, trucks, trailers, or similar fleet equipment preferred.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices, mechanical systems, brake systems, electrical systems, vehicle electronics, and general automotive or truck repair.
- Ability to read and understand safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance instructions, service information, technical procedures, and equipment manuals.
- Ability to document repairs, complete work orders, and maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations used in mechanical and maintenance work.
- Ability to apply practical mechanical reasoning to diagnose problems and carry out repair instructions provided verbally, in writing, or through diagrams and technical documentation.
- Ability to communicate professionally and work effectively with supervisors, mechanics, drivers, vendors, and other employees.
- Ability to prioritize work and respond to changing fleet maintenance and operational needs.
Equipment & Certification Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license appropriate for vehicles operated as part of assigned job duties and maintain a driving record that meets company-established guidelines.
- Must be trained, evaluated, and authorized by the company before independently operating forklifts or other powered industrial equipment.
- Must successfully complete any company-required equipment, safety, or job-specific training applicable to assigned duties.
- Employees assigned duties involving hazardous materials, spill response, emergency response, CPR, or First Aid must complete applicable company-required training before performing those duties.
Physical Requirements
- The Fleet Mechanic position requires physical automotive and fleet maintenance work.
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, and work in various positions while inspecting or repairing vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to frequently use hands and fingers to handle tools, equipment, parts, controls, fasteners, and mechanical components.
- Ability to occasionally sit while performing assigned duties.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, jacks, and other shop equipment applicable to assigned work.
- Specific vision abilities required for the position include depth perception and the ability to safely inspect mechanical components and equipment.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop, yard, and vehicle service environment.
- Employees frequently work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, tools, and shop equipment.
- Work may also be performed outdoors and in varying weather and temperature conditions.
- Employees may be exposed to diesel exhaust, fumes, airborne particles, oils, fuels, automotive fluids, batteries, cleaning products, and other chemicals commonly associated with vehicle maintenance operations.
- Employees must follow applicable safety procedures, hazard communication requirements, environmental procedures, and use required personal protective equipment.
- Noise levels may vary depending on shop activity, tools, vehicles, and equipment in operation.
