Fleet Mechanic Supervisor (FL, Winter Garden)

WORK OBJECTIVE

Performs highly skilled mechanical work analyzing and diagnosing problems, inspecting and/or repairing detective parts. Performs preventative maintenance on automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, graders, fire trucks, pumps, gas compressors, sanitation hydraulic packer trucks, and other related equipment. Employee supervises fleet mechanics in their duties and works under general supervision using independent judgment and initiative. Employee interfaces with user departments when necessary to coordinate work orders and work to be performed. The position assumes additional responsibilities in absence of Fleet Manager This position reports to the Fleet Maintenance Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Performs general and major overhaul and repairs automobiles, light and heavy mowers, and other automotive or diesel, pumps, compressor and mechanical equipment.
• Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems, bearings, bushings, and seals.
• Tunes motors using standard testing equipment.
• Repairs and overhauls brakes, transmissions, differentials, and front and rear axle assemblies.
• Repairs and installs hydraulic controls.
• Inspects, repairs, overhauls, and assembles automotive electric equipment such as generators, distributors, and starters.
• Assist and trains lower level mechanics.
• Uses hand and power driven tools and equipment such as grinders, fender hammers, sanders, drill presses, lathes, testing and welding equipment, and other garage and mechanical shop tools and equipment.
• Completes work orders and requisitions for needed parts.
• Operates various equipment and vehicles in performance of duties.
• May perform welding duties associated with tasks.
• Provide general supervision of the fleet shop coordinating work orders and activities with fleet mechanics and end users.
• Assist and/or function as the Fleet Manager as required.
• Performs other assigned duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from high school or a GED
• Minimum of (5) years experience in heavy truck and equipment repair; and a minimum of (3) years experience in automotive and light truck repair.
• Must possess a valid Florida ?CDL? Class B license with air brake endorsement.
• ASE Certification required.
• EVT Certification required.
• One to three years of supervisory experience.
• Based on FMCSA regulations, applicants for employment and existing employees in positions requiring a CDL are subject to pre-employment, post-employment, and ongoing testing for controlled substances and alcohol as a condition of employment.

Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Considerable knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of a wide variety of automobiles, trucks, diesel motors, and other general and specific automotive and diesel equipment.
• Considerable knowledge in the repair and service of automotive and truck air conditioning systems.
• Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
• Considerable knowledge of all types of shop tools such as drills, pressers, grinders, micrometers, boring bars, reamers, brake relining, and drum grinding machines, and valve re facing and seat grinding tools.
• Ability to diagnose engines in automotive equipment, pumps, turbines, and compressors.
• Ability to detect by inspection any broken part or improperly adjusted part of assembly.
• Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports.
• Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions accurately.
• Ability to provide direction to team mates.
• Ability to read and understand maintenance manuals for all motors and equipment being maintained or repaired.
• Ability to perform work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
• Skill in the application of methods and techniques used in the automotive and diesel mechanic craft.
• Skills in the care and use of pertinent tools, equipment, and facilities.
• Skill in the field of metal fabrication and welding of mig tig and stick as needed.
• Ability to use and understand ECM testing equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Requires intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (80+ pounds).
• Some work is performed in usual office conditions with some exposure to disagreeable environmental factors, e.g., cleaning chemicals/fumes, mild temperature variations, dust. Some work is performed in outdoor environments. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g., heat, humidity, inclement weather. Some tasks include working in and around vehicle/equipment and lawn maintenance equipment, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents.
