First Student is hiring an experienced Fleet Technician II for our Bellport maintenance team.
This is not an entry-level mechanic position. Candidates must have at least three years of professional or military hands-on experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing vehicles or heavy equipment.
Experience must include actual repair work on multiple vehicle systems—not only oil changes, tire service, fueling, detailing, or other basic maintenance.
To be considered, your application or résumé should clearly show at least three years of qualifying experience, including the types of vehicles and systems you have worked on.

As a Fleet Technician II, you will perform hands-on maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs that keep our school bus fleet safe, dependable, and ready for service.
Responsibilities include:
Diagnosing and repairing brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, and electrical systems
Performing preventive maintenance and scheduled fleet inspections
Troubleshooting batteries, belts, hoses, filters, fluid systems, and related components
Completing DOT inspections and vehicle-safety assessments
Using diagnostic equipment and software to identify mechanical and electrical problems
Responding to emergency or roadside service needs
Completing accurate work orders and documenting labor, repairs, and parts usage
Safely moving buses around the facility or between work areas
Maintaining personal tools, shop equipment, and a clean working environment
Assisting less-experienced technicians when needed
Candidates must have:
At least three years of professional or military hands-on vehicle or heavy-equipment maintenance and repair experience
Experience diagnosing and repairing multiple mechanical or electrical vehicle systems
A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
A current Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, or the ability and willingness to obtain the required CDL within six months of hire
The ability to meet New York State eligibility requirements for operating a school bus.
Experience using mechanic hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
A personal mechanic tool set or the ability to build the required tool set
The ability to work independently, follow safety procedures, and accurately document completed repairs
The ability to lift at least 50 pounds and work underneath vehicles in crouched, kneeling, or prone positions
Preference may be given to candidates with:
Diesel, bus, truck, commercial-fleet, or heavy-equipment repair experience
Vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel technology
ASE certifications
Experience performing DOT inspections
Previous school bus or passenger-vehicle maintenance experience
Relevant military vehicle-maintenance experience
