Job Description
Typical hours/days: 8:00am-4:30pm Mon-Fri. Hours & days will vary with weather events and emergencies.
Traits required to succeed in this role: self-starter, work independently with minimum supervision, problem solver, and work as a member of a team. Job duties include, but are not limited to, mechanical repair & maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.
Troubleshoots & diagnoses malfunctions, perform corrective maintenance in a variety of vehicles, equipment and trucks. Performs field repairs as needed.
Examples of Duties
- Performs diagnosis, maintenance, and repair on a variety of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, and final drive units in automobiles, trucks, and heavy
equipment.
- Performs diagnosis, maintenance, and repair on a variety of braking systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, and carburetors and fuel injection systems.
- Performs major diagnosis, maintenance, and repair on hydraulic systems, including hydraulic pump repair, including electronically controlled, pilot controlled, and base hydraulic type systems.
- Performs maintenance and repairs on all types of subsystems, such as engine management, ABS brakes, air bag systems, transmission controls, climate controls, ignition
systems, fuel delivery systems, and engine performance systems and automated data management and collection equipment.
- Responds to telephone and radio requests to repair Law Enforcement vehicles and equipment, fire apparatus and equipment, Utility vehicle and equipment, forestry vehicles and equipment, Roads, and Street maintenance equipment.
- Performs field repairs as needed.
- Repairs or replaces tires.
- Replace glass and windshields. Perform minor body repairs.
- Performs major and minor metal fabrication for replacement parts; operates arc welcer, MIG/wire welder, turning lathe, and acetylene torch plasma cutting equipment and aluminum and stainless-steel welding equipment.
- Acquires parts and equipment needed for the successful repair and maintenance of equipment.
- Performs safety inspections on all city vehicles and equipment.
- Enters and retrieves information from computerized databases.
- Maintains accurate service records; to include inputting data into the Fleet Management Software.
- Operates computer systems to retrieve and enter data.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
- Completes required reports and maintains vehicle and equipment maintenance records.
- Performs operations of all vehicles and equipment that is serviced and maintained for the city.
- Responds to after-hours call-ins. Works during emergency events in support of 24-hour operations.
- Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid Class D driver's license issued by the State of North Dakota at the time of hire and acquisition of a Class B CDL driver's license with Air Brake Endorsement within 12 months of hire.
- Must obtain ASE Certification in two of the following areas within one (1) year of accepting employment: Either Auto/Light Truck: Suspension and Steering, Brakes or Electrical/Electronic Systems or Medium/Heavy Truck: Suspension and Steering, Brakes, or Preventative Maintenance.
- Must comply with USDOT drug/alcohol screening requirements.
To obtain Grade 16, employee must complete the following:
- Achieve ASE Master Status in Automotive and/or Truck Categories
- Test and pass EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) testing and Certification
- Have worked for the city for 2 continuous years.
- Is in good standing with job performance.
Supplemental Information
- Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of DOT rules and regulations, department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine diagnosis and repair principles.
- Knowledge of Computer diagnostic programs and equipment, to include, but not limited to; Cummins Insight, Mavstart NED, Elgin Danfoss, Allison Trans Software, and Snapon Solos.

- Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicle and equipment hydraulic, mechanical, brake, ignition, HVAC, transmissions, ignition, electrical, computer-bases, and other systems.

- Knowledge of small engine equipment repairs.
- Knowledge of work safety principles.
