Job Announcement
$2,500 Sign-on Bonus*
Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment, under limited supervision. Analyzes and diagnoses gas and fuel operated vehicles for maintenance defects. Performs Virginia state and emission inspections of vehicles and equipment. Performs road tests on new and repaired vehicles. Operates specialized equipment common to the automotive repair industry and machine shops. Performs related work as required.
Schedules: Day Shifts - 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., OR 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Evening Shift - 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Locations: Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox depending on the needs of the Department of Fleet Management (DFM).
Note: Multiple full-time Fleet Technician I positions may be filled from this announcement. This is an entry-level position, and the salary offer will not exceed the mid-point ($72,728.66) of the advertised salary range. Compensation rules apply per Fairfax County personnel regulations for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.
The position may be underfilled as a Fleet Technician Aide (S15); the Underfill Requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.

Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of the tenth grade plus two years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a set of hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
This position may be underfilled as a Fleet Technician Aide (Grade S15; $46,160.40 - $80,780.75). The employment standards for the Fleet Technician Aide are:

Completion of the tenth grade with coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance. Possession of a set of basic hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.
Applicants hired at the Fleet Technician Aide will be non-competitively promoted to the Fleet Technician I level upon successful completion of an underfill agreement.
Note: Underfill candidates must be able to meet the minimum qualifications of the Fleet Technician I within two years of the job announcements closing date of 07/31/2026.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, commercial drivers license screening, and pre-employment physical to the satisfaction of the employer.
This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift 50 pounds on an average of once daily, stoop, bend, twist and reach many times daily, use ladders extensively, and use creeper (or get on hands and knees) several times daily. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
