Description
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled and skilled journey level work in the mechanical repair and maintenance of light and heavy gasoline and diesel driven automotive and other mechanical equipment. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Examples of Duties
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Evaluates, detects, and diagnoses major and/or minor mechanical problems on emergency vehicles and/or equipment; implements required repairs.
- Performs preventive maintenance on emergency vehicles and/or equipment.
- Prepares and submits work orders.
- Measures, designs, and fabricates structures for use in/on emergency vehicles and/or equipment; may build/rebuild transmissions and engines; and may deliver fuel.
- Change tires and repairs flats, balances wheels, performs tune ups, changes filters and wipers.
- Provides roadside repairs for disabled vehicles.
- Picks up and cleans parts, cleans and rebuilds components and subassemblies.
- Maintains inventory of parts and equipment for fleet maintenance. Contacts vendors or suppliers for required parts.
- Maintains records of vehicle use, repairs and history.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Clean and wash motorized equipment.
- Conduct inspections of automotive and mechanical equipment to assess repair needs and estimate repair costs; occasionally perform metal work, including cutting and welding.
- Fabricate and modify parts and equipment as authorized.
- Interpret and work from sketches and blueprints to execute tasks effectively.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college.
- Over five years up to and including four years of emergency vehicle repairs or related experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
- IMPORTANT: Submit a copy of certifications and license with application. Applications submitted without these items will not be considered.
- May require MACS 609 certification to use freon.
