Description

The purpose of this position is to perform skilled electrical, mechanical, and fabrication work to install, configure, test, and maintain specialized equipment in County fleet vehicles under the general supervision of the Upfitter Lead. Ensures vehicles are safely equipped and operational in accordance with County standards, manufacturer specifications, and applicable safety requirements to support public safety and County operations. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Examples of Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Installs, wires, programs, and integrates emergency lighting, sirens, radios, mobile data systems, cameras, communication equipment, and other specialized vehicle components.
  • Performs electrical diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, and system modifications to ensure reliable operation and compliance with safety standards.
  • Fabricates, mounts, and configures consoles, partitions, brackets, weapon racks, storage systems, and related equipment.
  • Conducts testing, quality assurance inspections, and safety checks to verify proper installation and functionality prior to vehicle deployment.
  • Maintains installation records, wiring documentation, inventory information, and work order updates within Fleet management systems.
  • Removes, repairs, reconfigures, and recovers equipment from decommissioned vehicles for reuse or disposal in accordance with County procedures.
  • Assists with the upfitting of law enforcement, emergency response, public works, and administrative vehicles to meet operational requirements and County standards.
  • Maintains shop tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance to less experienced team members and supports special projects as assigned.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by vocational training, technical school coursework, military training, or specialized training in automotive electrical systems, electronics, emergency vehicle equipment, or related fields is preferred.
  • Over two years up to and including four years' experience in automotive electrical, mechanical, electronics, communications equipment installation, fleet maintenance, emergency vehicle upfitting, or closely related work. Experience involving public safety or specialty vehicle installations is preferred.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

  • Preferred Certifications:

  • ASE Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6) Certification.

  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Electrical Systems (T6) Certification.

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification.

  • SoundOff Signal Blueprint, Whelen CenCom, or similar manufacturer certification.

  • OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Certification or equivalent safety training.
