THE OPPORTUNITY

The Food Safety Engineer has the broad objective of reducing food safety risk in the manufacture and distribution for all products in the Abbott Nutrition portfolio. The successful incumbent will require the ability to appropriately identify, assess and minimize risks in the manufacturing of products to assure the safety, efficacy, regulatory compliance and customer satisfaction while balancing the need to not impact manufacturing efficiency. In order to meet business unit objectives, the Food Safety Engineer will be responsible for assuring the appropriate departments are pulled in as needed to deliver on expected results. As the Food Safety Engineer for Food Safety, this person will need to provide creative risk mitigation strategies for new and existing projects/processes to successfully deliver safe, quality foods in both infant and adult production manufactured at the Columbus Plant. The Food Safety Engineer will work independently and will need strong skills to lead cross-functional groups of SMEs and set expectations against key company and department goals while delivering results.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

• Serve as the technical lead for food safety projects, risk mitigation activities and event response efforts.
• Conduct and support Food Safety risk assessments that provide assessment of issues, risks, schedule and resource requirements for activities with potential food safety implications.
• Support the development and implementation of innovative food safety initiatives, regulatory requirements, and continuous improvement projects.
• Collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Medical Safety, Regulatory Affairs, Global Food Safety, Maintenance, Microbiology, Supply Chain, and other cross-functional teams to investigate, remediate, and prevent food safety and quality issues.
• Support internal/external audits, certifications, and Regulatory inspections (FDA, SQF, Halal, Organic Rabbinical, Corporate, Division, and third party audits), by providing technical expertise and responding to food safety related inquiries.
• Develop, revise, and maintain food safety policies, procedures, standards, and preventive control programs to ensure compliance with regulatory, customer, and corporate requirements.
• Serves as a key plant contact for food safety technical support, leading problem-solving efforts, and develop/implement corrective and preventative actions related to food safety issues.
• Monitor and evaluate manufacturing nonconformances, environmental monitoring results, process controls, product data, and consumer complaints to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of food safety systems and controls.
• Evaluate the impact of food safety and quality requirements on manufacturing operations, product performance, and operational costs.
• Provide food safety oversight and risk assessment for changes to manufacturing procedures, work orders, equipment, processes, testing programs, and facility operations.
• Serve as the Food Safety Plan/HACCP team lead, responsible for the maintenance, and ongoing effectiveness of the site's food safety plan and controls.
• Lead hazard analyses, preventive control assessments, verification and validation activities, program reviews, and cross-functional food safety team meetings to ensure compliance with regulatory, customer, and corporate requirements.
• Serve as a Validation Review Board member, attending all board meetings and providing review and approval of validation protocols, reports, and related documentation to ensure compliance with food safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

 

SHIFT

Day shift. This will ideally be a shifted schedule to allow for more coverage and support beyond the typical first shift. This will be discussed and decided between the candidate and hiring manager throughout the interview process

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors Degree in an Engineering or Technical Field
• 3+ years of experience
• Engineering experience and demonstrated use of Quality tools/methodologies.
• Solid communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong project management and leadership skills, including the demonstrated ability to lead multi-departmental project teams and resolve quality-related issues in a timely and effective manner
• Advanced computer skills, including statistical/data analysis and report writing skills.
• Experience implementing various product and process improvement methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing).
• Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with technical writing, root cause assessment/analysis, and corrective actions
• Experience implementing various product and process improvement methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing).

• Experience working with microbiology to ensure appropriate environmental monitoring and that microbiology requirements are considered in product and process development activities

$78,000.00 – $156,000.00
