General Statement of Duties

Forsyth County Department of Social Services is seeking a highly motivated team-oriented individual to join the Foreign Language Interpreter Services Unit. The desired candidate for this position must demonstrate professionalism, the ability to multi-task, be people-oriented, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Distinguishing Features

This position will be required to assist agency staff with on-site and off-site visits, adhere to the time-sensitive response of agency needs, provide interpretation services for clients /customers on an as needed basis, translates documents, forms, and other agency related material for agency staff and demonstrate the ability to remain professional, impartial and ethical in all their interactions.

The interpreter will be required to assist agency staff with on-site and off-site visits, adhere to the time-sensitive response of agency needs, provide interpretation services for clients /customers on an as needed basis, translates documents, forms, and other agency related material for agency staff.

The interpreter will be required to have experience communicating effectively with the public as interpretation and translation skills are required. This position will involve initial training as well as continued training and improvement goals.

This position may occasionally work some weekend and evenings.

This position calls for the ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED and one year of experience demonstrating a fluency in both English and the foreign language(s) necessary (Spanish) to successfully perform the assigned job duties.

Prefer experience in a health care or human services setting.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

A valid drivers license is required.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Considerable knowledge of foreign language(s) in both spoken and written forms

Fluency in English and Spanish;

Working knowledge of medical terminology;

Ability to interpret a wide range of information;

Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals in both English and Spanish and;

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Strong verbal and written communication skills are important for interacting with internal and external customers.

Making home visits with other staff to interpret medical, financial, and social information for non English-speaking patients;

Providing interpreter services needed in the clinical setting as well as by telephone;

Translating written materials from English to a foreign language in the development of pamphlets, brochures, and other materials;

Excellent organizational and computer skills are necessary, with attention to detail and accuracy.

Assisting in outreach efforts in non English-speaking communities by identifying pregnant women and encouraging them to seek early and consistent prenatal care and;

This position aligns and abides by the regulations set forth within the Civil Rights Title VI requirements. In addition, have the ability to remain professional, impartial and ethical in all their interactions.
