Forensic Pediatrics- CLINICAL ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville has an opening for a full-time position in the Division of Forensic Pediatrics and Child Protection. The position will be at the non-tenure accruing level of Assistant/Associate Professor and will assume the role of Medical Director of the University of Florida’s Child Protection Team (CPT) and fellowship program. Major responsibilities will include directing the day-to-day clinical operation of the Child Protection Team, clinical care to victims of child abuse, and teaching of fellows, residents and medical students. Conducting community trainings on child abuse is also required.

The Director supervises the largest CPT in Florida, in what is an advanced statewide Child Protection Team system. This is a large busy clinical and academic team that includes 10 child abuse examiners of different disciplines, 23 case coordinators/interviewers, a supervising Team Coordinator to meaningfully manage contracts, reports, hiring and scheduling, a sexual abuse trauma therapy program, and focused senior CPT assistants working on death reviews and Death Review Teams for multiple counties. Services are provided at CPT Clinics as well as to area hospitals. Including Wolfson Children’s Hospital (Level I Pediatric Trauma Center) and the University of Florida Health – Jacksonville (Level II Trauma Center).

This position will report to the Chief of the Division of Forensics and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. Following is a general description of duties and responsibilities:

1. Provide overall direction and supervision of the CPT team for program service delivery and administration.
2. Provide leadership in establishing an effective and coordinated response to Child Abuse Hotline reports with the designated area Department of Children and Families representatives. Participate and represent the team in the designated community service area as appropriate.
3. Provide advanced medical consultations and supervision, interfacing with 8 different county child protection agencies (Department of Children and Families), the medical examiners, and officers of the State Attorney.
4. Provide medical evaluations of children, and supervise and review the work of the provider agency’s team medical practitioners for the provision of team medical evaluations of children suspected to be abused or neglected.
5. Arrange for and provide in-service training and other professional development for team staff and medical personnel. Assist the statewide CPT Medical Director in the planning and provision of training for regional and statewide training sessions.
6. Participate as a committee member (or appoint a medical designee) in the local Child Abuse Death Review (CADR) Committee.
7. Annually, plan and conduct a minimum of two training sessions in the detection of child abuse and neglect for area physicians and other medical staff, particularly those working in hospital emergency rooms.
8. Provide guidance and oversee the team’s screening of child abuse reports made to the Florida Abuse Hotline, and provide selected direct screening as required by law, or when otherwise determined appropriate.
9. Be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for consultation to team members and team physicians including telemedicine consultation, when available and appropriate, for medical assessment needs. Arrange coverage by another CMS approved CPT Medical Director when unavailable.
10. Assure medical representation for team staffing.
11. Participate in peer reviews with other team physicians and other medical providers. If designated and approved, participate in monitoring of child protection teams as a member of the statewide-designated monitoring team.
12. Attend statewide child protection team meetings and other meetings, and training sessions as required.
13. Provide medical consultation in an area of expertise to other teams when requested.
14. Provide depositions and expert court testimony when appropriate.
15. Provide teaching of fellows, residents and students.
