Description

Performs difficult skilled technical work providing forensic services, directing forensic personnel, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Forensic Services Division Supervisor. Continuous supervision is exercised over Forensic Services Technicians and Police Processing Technicians.

Examples of Duties

  • Supervises daily squad activities of Forensic Services Technicians and Prisoner Processing Technicians.
  • Supervises and trains Forensic Services Technicians while managing personnel development.
  • Performs administrative tasks to include: maintaining vehicle and squad inspections and replenishes items as needed, composing and reading emails, composing internal investigative packages, composing and administering Documented Counseling, composing Corrective Action Reports and Supervisory Reviews.
  • Prepares detailed technical reports with comprehensive field notes of crime scenes and reviews and approves squad personnels Crime Scene Supplements once they have been completed; reviews and approves line-ups and analyzes squad personnels Crime Scene Supplementals by completing Administrative/Technical Reviews.
  • Provides forensic services to the Winston-Salem Police/Fire Departments as well as all of Forsyth County by responding to crime scenes for processing by conducting forensic analysis including documentation, videography, photography, and sketching, in addition of identifying collecting and preserving physical evidence to include latent prints.
  • Serves as a resource for squad personnel by providing guidance and leadership; serves as the Forensic Services Division Supervisor in his/her absence.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: Associates/Technical degree with coursework in forensic science, biology, chemistry, criminal justice, or related field and considerable experience with crime scene processing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to provide supervision and leadership to assigned personnel; advanced knowledge of methods and standards employed in forensic science; advanced knowledge of rules of evidence; advanced knowledge of photography; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to use all issued equipment at the required level of proficiency; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and position specific software; ability to follow complex oral and written directions; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; ability to present clear and concise testimony in court; ability to work independently in the absence of direct supervision; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and members of the public.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing and

stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires tasting or smelling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and wearing a respirator; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
