Job Description and Duties
FORESTRY AIDE - CHANNEL COAST DISTRICT / VENTURA SECTOR
"Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKs eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. The Forestry Aide reporting location is the Channel Coast District's main office located at 911 San Pedro St, Ventura, CA 93001. This position will work under the lead of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor) within the Natural Resources Division at the Channel Coast District.
The Forestry Aide will assist in all aspects of forestry and natural resource management tasks: fire prevention, trash removal, invasive species removal, herbicide application, tree felling and trimming, bucking, creation of burn piles or appropriate disposal of vegetation, crew coordination, planning, reporting and mapping. Forestry Aides in this position conduct tasks independently as well as part of a team, may also act in a lead role overseeing other crews performing these tasks. In addition, it is expected that a Forestry Aide will work in a collaborative environment with interdisciplinary programs keeping within the confines of agency policy.
The position will work between eight (8) to thirty (30) hours a week depending on the season. Work hours will vary, but current expected work schedule is three (3) or four (4) days a week at ten (10) hours per day. Applicants must be able to work days, evenings, weekends, holidays and special events if needed. A Department and District approved uniform is required to be worn during work hours. This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible.
Applicants should have the following qualities: ability to stand for prolonged periods; work under varying weather conditions; ability to walk across uneven terrain in both uphill and downhill conditions to perform duties, ability to perform manual labor, and perform basic mathematical computations associated with assigned duties.
The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
This position requires a valid Class C driver's license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver's license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver's license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) 599.961, this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR 599.962.

Working Conditions
As safety allows, work outdoors in various weather conditions, unpleasant conditions, and hazardous situations (e.g., inclement weather, around garbage or other debris, illegal encampments, raw sewage and chemicals). During burning operations employee will be exposed to smoke and heat. Work at elevated heights or near fast moving machinery or traffic. Employee may be required to work long hours and weekends/holidays. Work in office environment.
Ability to walk across uneven terrain in both uphill and downhill conditions to perform the duties associated with the job. Stand for long periods of time to perform the duties associated with the job. Ability to perform manual labor (e.g. occasionally lifting, loading, carrying loads up to 50lbs).
Read, write and speak in a clear and concise manner. Develop practical solutions to problems and make sound decisions given available information and situational parameters. Perform basic mathematical computations associated with assigned duties. Skill to utilize measurements (e.g., tsp., tbsp., quart, feet, yard, meter) to measure and/or mix and apply various chemical solutions.
