    Description

    Position Summary

    We are seeking a reliable and safety-focused Forklift Operator / Yard Dog to join our operations team. This role is responsible for safely operating forklifts to load, unload, transport, and stage materials while also performing yard dog (yard jockey) duties, including moving trailers throughout the facility. The successful candidate will ensure the efficient flow of materials and trailers while maintaining a safe, organized, and productive work environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Forklift Operations
    • Safely operate various types of forklifts, including sit-down, or other material handling equipment as required.
    • Load and unload trucks, trailers, railcars, and shipping containers.
    • Move raw materials, finished goods, and inventory throughout the warehouse and yard.
    • Stage materials for production, shipping, and receiving.
    • Perform daily equipment inspections and report any maintenance concerns.
    • Ensure loads are secure and transported safely.
    • Accurately complete inventory movements using RF scanners, warehouse management systems (WMS), or shipping documentation.
    • Maintain clean and organized storage areas.

    Yard Dog (Yard Jockey) Duties
    • Safely move trailers throughout the yard using a yard truck (yard dog).
    • Position trailers at loading docks according to shipping and receiving schedules.
    • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of trailers and yard equipment.
    • Verify trailer numbers, seals, and documentation.
    • Coordinate trailer movement with warehouse, shipping, receiving, and transportation personnel.
    • Monitor yard organization to maximize efficiency and minimize congestion.
    • Report damaged trailers, equipment, or unsafe conditions immediately.

    General Responsibilities
    • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
    • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Assist with shipping, receiving, inventory counts, and general warehouse duties.
    • Maintain accurate documentation and equipment inspection records.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives and housekeeping standards.
    • Work collaboratively with supervisors, warehouse staff, and transportation personnel.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Required
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Previous experience operating forklifts in a warehouse, manufacturing, or industrial environment.
    • Experience operating a yard dog (yard jockey)
    • Valid forklift certification (or ability to obtain certification).
    • Strong understanding of warehouse safety practices.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Good communication and organizational skills.
    • OSHA Certified

    Preferred
    • Experience with warehouse management systems (WMS).
    • Experience in shipping and receiving operations.
    • Knowledge of inventory control procedures.
    • Previous experience working in a fast-paced industrial or logistics environment.

    • Safe operation of powered industrial equipment.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • Ability to interpret shipping documents and work orders.
    • Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment inspections.
    • Strong problem-solving skills.
    • Commitment to workplace safety and quality.

    Physical Requirements
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) on a regular basis.
    • Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, climbing, and reaching.
    • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
    • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
    • Ability to safely enter and exit forklifts and yard trucks multiple times throughout the shift.

    Working Conditions
    • Warehouse, distribution center, manufacturing facility, or industrial yard.
    • Exposure to changing weather conditions, dust, noise, and moving equipment.

    Safety Responsibilities
    • Operate equipment in accordance with OSHA/company safety standards.
    • Conduct daily equipment inspections before use.
    • Immediately report accidents, incidents, hazards, or equipment defects.
    • Participate in required safety meetings and training.
    • Maintain compliance with all workplace health and safety policies.
