About the role Pear Tree School is an independent K–9 school in Kitsilano. We're looking for a university student to staff our front desk during school hours. The role is genuinely quiet — the phone rings a few times a day, foot traffic is light, and most of your time will be available to study at the desk. We're paying you to be a calm, professional presence at the front of the school. Bring your textbooks.
Schedule (pick one)
- Full-time: Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (eligible for benefits — see below)
- Part-time mornings: Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
- Part-time afternoons: Mon–Fri, 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Start date: Early July 2026
Compensation $19/hour.
Full-time hires also receive, starting after the 3-month probation:
- 3 paid personal days per year
- Extended health benefits
What you'll do
- Answer the phone (low volume)
- Greet parents, visitors, and couriers at the door
- Sign for deliveries and route them to the right person
- Light administrative tasks as they come up — filing, printing, basic data entry, scanning, light email work (typically under an hour a day)
What we expect
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Professional, warm manner with parents, students, and visitors — you're the first impression of the school
- Clean, presentable appearance (business casual)
- Comfortable with Gmail, Google Workspace, and basic office software
- Strong written and spoken English
- Discretion — you'll occasionally overhear sensitive parent or staff conversations and need to keep them confidential
Requirements
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at a Vancouver-area post-secondary institution
- Legally authorized to work 40 hours per week, year-round, in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or holder of an open work permit / PGWP / spousal open work permit). International students on a study permit are not eligible due to the 24-hour-per-week off-campus work cap during academic sessions.
- Available consistently for your full shift — no in-and-out
- Able to obtain a Criminal Record Check (Ministry of Public Safety) before starting — we cover the cost
The honest pitch
Most front desk jobs are stressful and constantly interrupted. This one isn't. You'll have meaningful blocks of uninterrupted study time at a real desk with reliable Wi-Fi. In exchange, when the phone rings or someone walks in, we need you focused, friendly, and fully present.
