Position Summary

Position Summary: The Associate Vice President of Academics (AVPA) provides district-wide leadership, direction, and administrative oversight for academic operations and services that support instructional quality, faculty success, academic innovation, and student achievement. The AVPA is responsible for leadership of faculty support services, curriculum and academic processes, instructional technology, accreditation coordination, assessment and program review, institutional effectiveness functions, and continuous improvement initiatives that support the college's mission and strategic priorities.

Working collaboratively with faculty, deans, directors, and institutional leaders, the AVPA promotes academic excellence by effectively implementing institutional priorities, making data-informed decisions, and aligning academic operations with student success goals, accreditation requirements, and institutional planning efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities: Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position:

Provides district-wide leadership and administrative oversight for academic operations and services that support instructional quality, faculty effectiveness, academic innovation, and student achievement.

Serves in leadership and advisory roles related to compliance, budget oversight, institutional initiatives, and representation on local, regional, and national organizations, and advises the Provost on matters related to academic priorities, operational planning, institutional effectiveness, and student success.

Provides leadership for faculty support services, instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology systems, and professional development initiatives that support effective teaching and learning across all instructional modalities..

Provides leadership for curriculum development, curriculum review, catalog maintenance, academic governance processes, and implementation of approved curriculum changes in collaboration with faculty, deans, and curriculum committees.

Provides administrative oversight for accreditation activities and academic compliance processes to ensure adherence to Higher Learning Commission requirements, Department of Education regulations, substantive change processes, and applicable state and federal requirements.

Provides administrative oversight for assessment, program review, student learning assessment, and continuous improvement processes to support academic quality, student success outcomes, and institutional effectiveness.

Provides administrative oversight for institutional effectiveness functions, including institutional research, institutional reporting, assessment support, accreditation reporting, data governance, and data-informed planning through supervision of the Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness.

Supports development and implementation of academic programs, including credit and non-credit offerings, workforce-aligned programs, micro-credentials, transfer pathways, and other instructional initiatives aligned with institutional priorities.

Supports development and maintenance of partnerships with K-12 schools, universities, workforce partners, community organizations, and external stakeholders to strengthen educational pathways, transfer opportunities, dual enrollment, workforce readiness, and student success.

Supports implementation of key academic initiatives, institutional projects, academic planning activities, and strategic planning efforts.

Provides leadership for grants and external funding aligned with institutional priorities, including Perkins and other workforce-focused funding.

Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience; Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience Requirements:

Master's degree in a related discipline from an institution accredited by an institutional accrediting body of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education

Five years of related, full-time, professional experience that includes two years of faculty teaching and/or academic leadership experience

Doctoral degree is preferred

An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge and understanding of current higher education issues, trends, and future conversations

Knowledge and understanding of demographics affecting higher education and ability to articulate challenges and opportunities for the college community

Knowledge of instructional pedagogies, learning styles, and current research in the field

Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and procedures

Knowledge of quality and process improvement systems, strategies and tools

Knowledge of current trends and methods related to research and data collection

Knowledge of curriculum development and management processes and requirements

Knowledge of federal and state reporting requirements and issues impacting higher education

Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow and operating procedures, as well as management principles and practices

Knowledge and skill in quantitative and qualitative research, data collection, statistical analysis and reporting

Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner

Ability to effectively supervise the work of others and lead a team committed to the college's mission

Ability to relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations

Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow multiple tasks through to completion with an attention to detail

Ability to work independently while contributing to team environment

Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems and to maintain strict confidentiality related to sensitive judgement and decision-making processes

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other department staff, students and the public

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work Environment: Work is primarily performed under general supervision in an office setting with appropriate climate controls. Travel, evening, and weekend work may be necessary.

Physical Requirements: Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting majority of time; walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met

Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important
