Position Summary

Coconino Community College EMS instructors are dynamic partners for students, employers, and communities to learn, train, and succeed in an associate degree, technical diploma, basic education, continuing education, and/or contract training program. An instructor works with students beyond the classroom to ensure their success, models CCC core abilities, and demonstrates commitment to excellence in program/course/training content and delivery. An instructor is able to work effectively in a collaborative environment; is willing to innovate and change to meet evolving program and industry needs; and demonstrates competency with use of technology that supports learning and teaching. An instructor maintains a flexible schedule, including availability for evening, weekend, online, or summer assignments, as appropriate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

With Students:

  • Teaches 30 load hours per year in a professional manner.
  • Provides advising outside of class time.
  • Maintains a minimum of five posted office hours per week.
  • Adheres to course outlines and student learning objectives.
  • Responds to student inquiries promptly.
  • Promote student success through timely communication, growth-based feedback, and implementation of strategies that meet the needs of diverse learners.

With Colleagues:

  • Adheres to a professional code of conduct and ethics throughout the College.
  • Attend college meetings as required. This includes New Faculty Orientation upon hire, biannual beginning of semester all-college faculty meetings, monthly faculty meetings, committee meetings, and external community outreach.
  • Actively serve in college-wide committees or external committees related to the construction industry.
  • Acquires and organizes course supplies.
  • Provides schedule building input and review as requested by Lead Faculty or Dean.

Communication:

  • Maintains and reports instructional records including grades and FTSE according to institutional calendar.
  • Utilizes learning management system (Canvas) as established in college procedure
  • Utilizes College email and responds promptly.

Scheduling:

  • Provides schedule-building input and review as requested by Lead Faculty/Coordinator or Dean.

Budget:

  • Cooperates with supervisor on the department budget.
  • Maintains fiscal responsibility.

Assessment and Strategic planning:

  • Promotes the mission, vision, guiding principles, and strategic plan of the College.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and assessment of courses and programs, including the assessment of student learning outcomes as prescribed by department and division.

Curriculum:

  • Plan for and instruct courses in the area of Emergency Medical Technician. Assignments may include EMS refreshers and CPR instruction.
  • Design and implement relevant and progressive curriculum.
  • Develops syllabi in accordance with college procedure and course outlines.
  • Develops new or revises existing curricula as needed, which may include College supported Articulation Task Force (ATF) participation.
  • Remains current in the assigned discipline(s).
  • Maintains discipline/course specific certifications and licensure where appropriate.

Institutional Leadership:

  • Leads collaboration amongst faculty in designated courses to facilitate consistency between sections as overseen by the lead faculty.
  • Assists in the evaluation or mentoring of part-time faculty as requested.
  • Participates in the operation and/or shared governance of the college through college committee assignments and department/division meetings.
  • Assists in the building of programs and event planning relevant to their discipline, and recruiting and retaining students in that program.
  • Serves as a professional role model for students and faculty.
  • Champions a collaborative and positive educational environment for all members of the College community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to teach assigned courses effectively. Knowledge of the subject area as defined by the National Highway and Safety Administration through the published National Emergency Services Education Standards. Knowledge of computer and related technology (including Canvas Learning Management System). Ability to teach using online learning management systems. Ability to maintain professional ethics and confidentiality of students and staff. Ability to support and promote the mission, values, purposes, and strategic plan of the College. Ability to work in a culturally diverse and team environment. Ability to integrate subject area with other related curricula. Capacity to be flexible. Knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws, such as Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Enthusiasm for teaching and learning, and willingness to share excitement with CCC community. Commitment to student success. Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university with six years of relevant experience
  • Relevant experience to include occupation experience as EMS personnel, of which at least 1 year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years prior to date of hire.
  • One year (2,000 hours) of recent related occupational experience may be waived if the applicant has at least 2 years of post-secondary teaching experience in the appropriate occupational field within 5 years prior to date of hire.
  • Current certification with Arizona Department of Health Services at the EMT level or higher
  • Current license/certificate as an IFSTA Emergency Services Instructor I or NAEMSE Level 1 (or higher)
  • Current Basic Life Support Instructor certification with the American Heart Association.
  • This position may include teaching online and requires expertise in integrating technology.
  • Qualified per CCC requirements at time of, and throughout, employment as an instructor. Must also meet and maintain Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements, Faculty Quality Assurance System (FQAS) standards, and/or other job specific licensing standards.

Preferred

  • Bachelors degree with two years of relevant experience preferred.
  • 3 years prior teaching or training experience in a related field.
  • Experience teaching in a higher education setting. Experience using learning management systems (i.e. Canvas).
