Position Description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom instruction to students through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing directly related to Fishing Gear, Industrial Skills, and Environmental Sampling; to maintain, repair, build, and replace all fisheries sampling gear (trawls, gill nets, cast nets, dredges, seines, etc.); and, the maintenance of shop equipment and shop spaces.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

• Receives general supervision from Marine Technology Program Director.
• May exercise functional and technical supervision over instructional assistants.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

Essential Functions:

• Serve as instructor and student supervisor during multiple training cruises aboard an ocean-going research vessel for trips up to 10-days per trip.
• Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students.
• Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
• Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
• Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide individual tutoring to students outside of the classroom as needed.
• Provide classroom demonstrations on various lab and shop equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.
• Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
• Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
• Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
• Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.

Other Important Functions:

• Participate in various activities and operations of the Marine Technology Program; work in the

laboratory, classroom, shop and on field trips and marine projects as assigned.

• Fill in for other instructors as needed.
• Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various texts book and select books to be used for future classes.
• Request and complete requisitions for repair and maintenance of equipment as needed.
• Maintain inventory records.
• Assist in the recruitment of students from community high schools and outreach events.
• Oversee and participate in the field studies and assignment; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate.
• Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, progress, and qualifications for graduation.
• Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substance such as blood borne pathogens; continually undergo training and train student in such procedures (required for all nursing faculties).
• Demonstrate community involvement.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:

• Marlinspike seamanship and principles of rope fibers and proper application in both fisheries and maritime applications.
• Effective use and repair of a myriad of fishing gear types. Understanding of fishing gear deployment and retrieval aboard small boats.
• Marine safety and seamanship techniques.
• Principles of safety in an industrial shop setting.
• Use of basic hand and power tools found in a standard wood shop.
• Basic chemistry principles applicable to transformation and degradation processes of contaminants in the environment.
• The principles of environmental assessment including the sources, transport, and fate of chemicals in the environment.
• Current sampling techniques and quality control techniques used to create monitoring plans for the investigation of chemical and biological impacts of environmental contaminants.
• Standard operating procedures for quality sediment/water collections employing standard sediment/water sampling equipment.
• Understanding of federal methods for decontamination of sampling equipment and laboratory instrumentation, including testing and analysis of environmental samples for contaminants.
• Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
• Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
• Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.
• Principles and procedures of record keeping.
• Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
• Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability To:

• Teach marine technology subject matter to students - specifically in the areas of fisheries gear maintenance and repair, fisheries data collections, rigging, marlinspike seamanship, net mending, environmental assessment processes, environmental sample collection and handling, environmental laws/policies, industrial safety, measurement systems, power tools, and small project construction.

• Safely operate small boats.

• Towing, trailering and launching of small boats.

• Safely handle and store hazardous chemicals.

• Safely work at sea aboard a research vessel.

• Maintain safe working conditions in both laboratory and field settings.

• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

• Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

• Communicate clearly and respectfully, both verbally and in writing.

• Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Minimum Education/Training:

• Industry experience in the field and/or AAS degree in Marine Technology is required

License or Certificate:

• Valid NC driver's license with driving record that is within the parameters set by the college
• US Coast Guard OUPV license or ability to obtain OUPV license within a year.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

• One or more years of experience in a community college, vocational, instructional setting as an instructor.
• One or more years of work experience as a fisheries technician or related field with significant exposure to environmental sampling and analysis.
• Experience on the graduate level in water chemistry and environmental sampling.
• Bachelor's degree or higher or equivalent industry training.
• Experience as a mentor or tutor.
• Experience working and/or living offshore for extended periods of time.
• Experience with welding and arc cutting
• OSHA10 training
• Rigging and crane training
