Department Profile

The Athletics Department operates within the Division of Kinesiology and provides athletic competition within the 3C2A for 19 intercollegiate athletic programs. Currently there are nine male and 10 female intercollegiate athletic programs. Approximately 500 male and female student athletes participate annually. This position will work with full-time and part-time faculty coaches to provide sports information services to these programs.

Summary

Plans, coordinates, and implements publicity, public information, and reporting of athletic events and activities.

Distinguishing Career Features

The Sports Information Publicist is a specialized position strategically coordinating external communications, producing compelling multimedia content, compiling and publishing competition statistics on behalf of the College's athletic programs. The position requires the ability to develop communications about the sports programs and prepare and distribute stories about events and activities.

Job Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Writes and distributes feature stories on athletics, student-athletes, and coaches. Obtains pre-contest information and compiles or summarizes post-contest results and occurrences.

  • Distributes marketing and communication materials to internal and external stakeholders through various channels. Schedules and publishes multimedia content across key social media platforms.

  • Prepares sport media guides and website information that includes schedules, athlete and coach profiles and biographies, performance statistics, and history.

  • Coordinates and trains staff essential to game competition; such as, but not limited to; announcer, scorers, clock operators, etc. at athletic events.

  • Maintain compliance by ensuring live, timely and accurate submission of official schedules, game results, statistical reports,

and team records to conference and athletic governing bodies using online systems and protocols.

  • Attends home and designated away athletic events and performs a variety of functions, such as, live stats, statistics, announcing, score keeping, clock operation to provide accuracy and a neutral working environment.

  • Maintains archives of athletic performance statistics, athlete biographies and other

information supporting publications.

  • Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The position requires a bachelors degree in Journalism, Sports Information or Sports Administration, Communications, Public Relations, English or a related communications field and 1 year of experience in sports journalism, sports information, media relations, public relations or communications with a specialization in sports, website management and updating social media, or external communications.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge and Skills

The position requires specialized knowledge of journalism techniques, practices, and principles. Requires specialized knowledge of the newspaper, television, and radio industry practices for written and oral materials. Requires advanced writing skills sufficient to prepare written materials for public and media consumption. Requires knowledge of and skills in using modern office productivity software including word processing, spreadsheets, photo editing, and desktop publishing. Requires sufficient math skills to compile statistics, ratios, and percentages. Requires written and verbal communication skills to develop and execute a comprehensive media and digital strategy. This includes proactively engaging with traditional media, cultivating a strong online community, and crafting content for the athletic website and all social media platforms. Possesses in-depth working knowledge of assigned athletic contests, including NCAA/3C2A conference rules, official scoring, and statistical methodologies.

Abilities

Requires the ability to develop and maintain relationships with athletic department staff, student athletes, and media representatives. Requires the ability to prepare press releases and social media posts, including taking and preparing photographs in complete and final form for distribution. Requires the ability to demonstrate sound judgment in the application and interpretation of events, situations, rules, and regulations. Requires the ability to write in a professional manner, proofread and edit accurately, and compile presentation-quality reports. Must be able to provide direction to others and to organize and manage multiple projects. Requires the ability to work flexible hours as the job may require evening and weekend commitments. Requires the ability to maintain cooperative and productive relationships with others. Must be able to operate and update the department's webpage and utilize statistics programs.

Physical Abilities

The position primarily requires the ability to move between various campus and athletic venues to attend events or meetings, including traversing across different locations. The incumbent should be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, which may include: Walking between buildings, stadiums, and offices. Maintaining a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods during data entry, game coverage, or presentations. Manual dexterity to operate computers and office machinery, including keyboards, mice, and copy/printer equipment. Tasks require hand-eye coordination for preparing digital and print materials. Auditory capacity to engage in conversations in person and via phone; verbal skills for public speaking at press events, webinars, or broadcast media. Visual acuity necessary for reviewing and formatting graphics, layouts, photography, and text for publication quality.

Work is performed outdoors and indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

Salary/Fringe Benefits

Grade 38 on District Classified Employee Salary Schedule at ($6,240.64/month)

Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)

Participation in the Public Employees Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security.

Conditions of Employment

This is a full-time, 12-calendar month classified position.

Work hours are flexible and assigned by the area manager based on Athletic program needs. The schedule, which is considered per contract, Fluctuating Schedule, may include day, evening, and weekend hours, and the position requires occasional travel to support athletic events. This position requires work in indoor and outdoor environments on various athletic fields.

Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.

Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.

Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit a TB Risk Assessment reviewed and signed by a health professional before employment.
