This is a Full time position (may include promotion and/or transfer).
General Job Summary
- Responsible for the safety and security of students and staff
- Conducts checks every 15 minutes to monitor behaviors, health / emotional needs of students
- Directs and demonstrates modeling behaviors to encourage appropriate interaction among students and staff and to avoid conflicts among students
- Administers discipline as needed such as removal of points, time outs and interventions, etc.
- Follows all policies and procedures of the Justice Center
- Attends and incorporates all necessary and mandated training offered
- Completes all required paperwork including logs in a neat and professional manner. Reviews Justice Center paperwork where necessary (such as behavioral incidents, request for doctor's appointments, etc.)
- Supervises movement in the Justice Center including
- Assistance and oversight of students in the Juvenile Center school to promote and to encourage learning and compliance
- Daily activities that include room searches to ensure safety.
- Actively participates in activities, programming and groups provided to the students and models skills presented to promote behavioral change
- Plans activities (groups, board games, crafts, reading, etc.) to promote positive interaction among students that does not include TV and video games only
- Has active interaction via discussion with students when possible to assist them in behavioral changes and the development of insight
- Participates in learning activities with the teaching staff when supervising the behavior in the Justice Center School.
- Meets with next shift to give full report of activities, incidents and needed interventions originating on the previous shift
Additional Responsibilities
- May be required to perform some maintenance tasks such as basic unit clean up and laundry.
- May be required to assist with the transportation of students to appointments outside the Justice Center and court hearings.
- Reviews the RAI with incoming students to determine appropriate admission. Refers admissions to the Chief Supervisor or Justice Administrator when RAI criteria for a particular student is unclear.
- May be required to act as an Admissions Officer described as follows:
- Serve as liaison with law enforcement agencies
- Communicate with Chief Supervisor to determine if a student can be admitted according to JDAI guidelines
- Key control and logging of all records related to key accountability
- Logging in and out of school personnel
- Answering inquiries from the public
- Controlling traffic flow in and out of the Justice Center via secure doors
- Monitor visitation
- Direct staff during evacuation of the building
- Monitor all radio communications
- Verify population counts; conduct computer entry of data on new admissions and releases. Generates updated POP sheet and email it to all necessary parties if required
- Maintain files with all necessary up-to-date paperwork on all students.
- Operates safety, communication and office equipment, etc.

Qualifications
- Associates Degree or related field preferred or a high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 to 4 years in criminal justice and/or human services related field and six months working experience with at-risk youth
- Three years of experience with the supervision of students
- A valid Ohio driver's license and an acceptable driving record
- Never convicted of a felony offense, DUI or domestic violence-related offense.
- Ability to balance conflicting points of view, function effectively under pressure and demonstrate discretion, integrity and fair-mindedness

- The employee must have the capacity to work in closed environment and work with criminal offenders, some of whom may be dangerous.
- Employees may be assigned to work in areas of the institution where there is a risk of violence or communicable disease.

Unusual Working Conditions
- Ability to push and pull objects, pick up objects, and bend repeatedly in order to move desks, beds, and other furniture to conduct security checks and search residents.
- Ability to step up on elevated surfaces to conduct room searches
- Ability to reach, bend, and stoop to perform security checks, and other tasks
- Ability to walk extended periods throughout the facility
- Prolonged periods of sitting or standing
- Ability to physically restrain residents physically under adverse conditions, including ability to enforce rules, regulations, and directives with non-compliant residents that may physically resist
- Ability to respond to emergency situations according to Justice Center policies, procedures and protocols.
- Ability to utilize restraint equipment appropriately.
- Ability to communicate verbal commands and directives effectively through the intercom/radio transmission monitoring system.
- Ability to lift and carry containers of items weighing up to 45.lbs
- Must be available on-site and on-call to meet departmental needs.
- Must demonstrate competency in implementing defensive tactics and satisfactorily complete all of the requirements in training of defensive tactics; including passing the recertification.
- Must perform tasks, duties, and job responsibilities without restrictions and/or limitations.
- Work involves walking, standing, running, climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling and jumping for varying periods of time.
- Must be physically able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to fifty pounds occasionally and/or frequently.
