Full-Time Groundskeeper

Job Description

Job Title:  Groundskeeper
Location: Fairfax, VA
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Pay: $20 per hour
 

Job Summary:
The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and cleanliness of outdoor areas such as lawns, gardens, parking lots, and walkways. This role ensures that landscapes are well-kept, aesthetically pleasing, and free of hazards. 

This position will primarily focus on Groundskeeping responsibilities; however, it is designed to be flexible based on operational needs across two communities. The Groundskeeper may be assigned to assist other departments as needed. Scheduling for cross-departmental support will be coordinated in advance by department heads in collaboration with the Director of Environmental Services.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Mow, trim, and edge lawns to maintain a neat appearance
• Plant, water, fertilize, and care for flowers, shrubs, and trees
• Remove weeds, debris, and litter from grounds and walkways
• Operate and maintain landscaping equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers, etc.)
• Perform seasonal tasks such as leaf removal, snow removal, and maintenance
• Monitor grounds for pests, diseases, or damage and report issues
• Maintain parking areas, sidewalks, and outdoor facilities in clean and safe condition
• Assist with minor repairs and general outdoor
• Ensure safe and proper use of hand and power tools.
• Inspect equipment and tools for safety before use; report malfunctioning equipment immediately.
• Keep work areas clean and safe—do not leave hazardous materials or tools unattended.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Manager, Supervisor, or Administrator.

Cross-Departmental Support

Based on operational needs, this position may assist in other departments across both communities. Areas of support may include:

• Transportation services
• Basic front desk and phone coverage
• Basic maintenance assistance
• Environmental Services support at The Gardens, including laundry and maintenance assistance

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Prior landscaping or groundskeeping experience is a plus
• Ability to operate landscaping tools and machinery safely
• Basic knowledge of plant care and lawn maintenance
• Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
• Strong attention to detail and reliability
• Valid VA Driver’s License

Working Conditions

• Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions
• May require early mornings, weekends, or seasonal overtime
• Physical demands include lifting, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Clear vision and manual dexterity required for detailed work and equipment inspections.
• Ability to perform frequent bending, stooping, squatting, lifting (up to 100 lbs), pushing, and pulling.
• Must be able to climb ladders (including roof access) and safely lift/move heavy items.
• Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors, including during adverse weather conditions.
• Exposure to tools, mechanical parts, cleaning products, dust, and potentially hazardous materials.
• Must use proper PPE and follow all safety protocols when handling equipment or chemicals.
