Description

Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to provide assistance to the assigned program coordinator or supervisor in the development, organization, supervision and leadership of community aquatics activities and fitness programs. Provide the safest conditions for pool and fitness customers using preventative measures. Employees in this classification perform at entry level and are responsible for performing both routine and non-routine community assistance duties as dictated by the nature of the program. Employee must exhibit friendly and professional customer service skills in all communication with the general public.

Days/Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 1:15 PM - 9:45 PM; May include nights, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs customer service responsibilities, e.g., answers telephone inquiries; contacts members and clients for dissemination of information; assists visitors; collects program and activity fees; promote growth in the aquatic complex.
  • May be required to demonstrate the proper use of fitness equipment.
  • Assists in preparation, scheduling, supervision as well as conducting various programs and activities.
  • Performs light custodial duties, e.g., maintains equipment, maintains cleanliness of facilities, performs set up and break down duties for activities and special events.
  • Maintains proper pool water chemistry through use of appropriate chemicals, pump and filtration systems.
  • Creates new programs and various flyers, newsletters, promotions and announcements for programs and activities as directed.
  • Organizes release of correspondence to notify community of pool and fitness programs, community activities and special events.
  • Oversees programs and activities in the absence of assigned coordinator or supervising employee to ensure the safety, general welfare and enjoyment of the general public.
  • Maintain preventative lifeguarding.
  • Performs first aid duties.
  • Monitors supplies and requirements of pool activities and fitness programs and coordinates with supervising employee to ensure ample supply.
  • Performs routine administrative/clerical support duties, e.g., maintains various records, program statistics and files; bookkeeping; data entry; performs routine accounting and reconciliation tasks; program and activity scheduling.
  • Coaches, supervises and leads various pool and fitness activities and programs.
  • Maintains current certifications.
  • May be assigned duties to include concessions and/or retail support of store.
  • May supervise part-time personnel when necessary.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) to two (2) years responsible experience in recreational activities, customer service and/or working with the general public; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

For full-time Lifeguard Positions, Lifeguard training, CPR/First Aid certification, and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification are required at time of hire. National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF)- Certified Pool Operator(CPO); National Parks & Recreation Association (NRPA)- Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification preferred.

For Fitness Positions a Degree in Exercise Science or related area is preferred or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Personal Training certificate is preferred.

Supplemental Information

Tasks include working around moving parts, light to moderate weight equipment, and materials handling where physical risks are predictable and/or controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.
