General Description: Richmond Community College faculty are expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, with a minimum of 20-25 on campus contact hours Monday through Friday. Nursing Faculty may be tasked with day, evening and/or weekend teaching assignments within the Associate Degree Nursing and/or Practical Nursing programs. An instructor, under the authority and direction of the Vice President for Instruction/Chief Academic Officer and in cooperation with the Program Coordinator, is responsible for providing effective instruction in the assigned curriculum area.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including hospitals and professional organizations.
  • Supervise and evaluate student progress, providing guidance and support.
  • Participate in ongoing program assessment and make improvements as necessary.
  • Maintains licensure/certifications and stay current with developments in Nursing and education.
  • Providing appropriate and effective instruction.
  • Teaching classes per the College's teaching load and formula in combinations including day, evening, weekend, off-campus and online as the College requires.
  • Providing relevant learning opportunities that promote student engagement and retention.
  • Creating meaningful assessments and evaluations of student work according to departmental standards.
  • Maintaining accurate student records, including course attendance to enhance retention and success.
  • Being available to students during office or lab hours for assistance.
  • Providing regular grade updates through Moodle gradebook.
  • Providing accurate, informed advising.
  • Maintaining accessible office or lab hours.
  • Attends faculty and staff meetings.
  • Attends Nursing pinning ceremonies and College's commencement ceremonies.
  • Understands College policies and procedures, degree requirements, and transfer agreements.
  • Providing students with current information regarding career opportunities, as appropriate.
  • Being informed about College services and support for students.
  • Manages inventory control including purchasing materials, supplies, equipment and tools.
  • Recruiting students, including participation in open houses, College events, and recruitment fairs.
  • Engaging in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Participating in student club activities and events.
  • Assisting with accreditation/regulatory reports.
  • Assisting with live projects as relevant.
  • Serve on College Committees and Nursing Advisory Board.
  • Performs other duties assigned that support the College mission and initiatives.
  • Substitutes in class/lab/clinical for absent colleagues.
  • Tutor students outside class meeting times.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of work areas and labs.
  • Aids other employees or departments as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the Institution. Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Able to teach in various delivery modes. Willing to accept day and/or evening teaching assignments and teaching assignments at other locations as needed by the Institution. This position could include instruction in the Associate Degree Program or the Practical Nursing Program.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree in nursing preferred, bachelor's degree in nursing required. Two years' full-time experience in clinical nursing practice as a R.N. required.
  • Must hold a current unrestricted license as a R.N. in North Carolina.
  • Teaching experience, particularly in a nursing program, preferred.
  • Prior to or within the first three (3) years of employment, nursing faculty who teach in a program leading to initial licensures as a nurse shall have preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation that is appropriate to assignment. The nurse faculty member in a program preparing individuals for registered nurse practice who has primary responsibility, designated by the program, for coordinating the planning, implementation, and evaluation of each major clinical nurse course shall hold a masters degree. Demonstrated ability to integrate computers into an instructional environment and on-line teaching experience preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) Provider certification.
  • NC Board of Nursing requirements: Must hold a graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution within 3 years of initial full-time employment.
