Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily operations of assigned laboratory sections, ensuring efficient workflow and high-quality patient testing.
  • Schedule laboratory staff, assign work responsibilities, and oversee staffing needs.
  • Perform Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) duties as needed while maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Supervise and perform laboratory testing, quality control procedures, and documentation.
  • Organize daily operations to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  • Monitor laboratory turnaround times and implement process improvements when needed.
  • Train, mentor, evaluate, and support laboratory personnel through coaching, performance appraisals, and professional development.
  • Assist with employee counseling and disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Maintain and update laboratory policies and procedures in compliance with state, federal, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
  • Oversee laboratory inventory management and supply ordering.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and coordinate preventive maintenance and equipment evaluations.
  • Assist with implementation of new laboratory testing methodologies and technologies.
  • Review abnormal patient results, quality control data, and assist staff with complex laboratory issues.
  • Collaborate closely with laboratory leadership and provide recommendations for operational improvements.
  • Assist with department safety initiatives and participate in safety committees and in-service education.
  • Assume Laboratory Director responsibilities during the Director's absence.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education & Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or an equivalent field required.
  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) License required.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers certification through the American Heart Association preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of hospital laboratory experience in general laboratory testing, including quality control and laboratory methodologies.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience in a Coordinator, Lead, Supervisor, or Manager role.
  • Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory regulations, accreditation standards, and quality management practices.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
