JOB SUMMARY

We have an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Temporary Counselor located at our campus in Menifee, CA. Mt. San Jacinto Community College District seeks a Full Time Temporary Counselor to perform a full range of counseling functions with a diverse community college population. Full time counselors are assigned 1372 hours per work year which equates to 196 service days and are coordinated with the supervising administrator. This includes a significant amount of student contact as well as a range of additional duties. Counselors are expected to participate in college governance through Academic Senate appointments to standing committees, and/or a variety of task forces and act as a liaison to instructional departments. The assignment may include a mixture of day, evening, multi-campus and off-campus work with face to face and/or online counseling appointments.

This recruitment is for a full-time temporary, non-teaching, categorically funded faculty assignment for Fall 2026 (July 2026 - December 2026).

Initial placement on the salary schedule will be commensurate with education and experience, not to exceed step five (5) on the assigned salary schedule. Step five (5) may be exceeded if the district determines an extraordinary need, or circumstance warrants a higher placement. This Academic assignment requires 1372 hours which equates to 196 service days per academic year. Certificated employees make contributions towards STRS (a retirement plan).

While this current vacancy is expected at the Menifee Valley campus, applicants may be assigned to any district facility.

This position is categorically funded and exists based on the availability of funds. If funds cease to be available, the District may, at its discretion, implement a reduction in force that could result in the elimination of the positions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic counseling:

  • Provide group orientations to new students including an overview of the college experience, college regulations, and provide assistance with planning first semester class schedule
  • Work with continuing students to develop Student Educational Plans in which students are assisted with learning how to assess, plan for, and pursue the vocational or academic program which best supports their career/life goals
  • Possess extensive knowledge of transfer requirements, articulation agreements, and vocational course patterns
  • Participate in follow-up and assistance to students experiencing academic difficulties, probation, and academic dismissal

Career/life counseling and development:

  • Encourage students to develop self-knowledge and skills through individual and group discussions with Counselors and peers
  • Use instrument assessing abilities, interests, values, personality styles, materials, and programs designed to assist with educational and occupational exploration, employment trends, effective career/life decisions and transitions, goal-setting, and implementation of these goals

Professional and Student Success Program Development:

  • Maintain currency in field
  • Develop, maintain, and evaluate student success programs
  • Develop, maintain, and review counseling department student learning outcomes

Personal counseling/crisis intervention counseling:

  • Including the identification of and assistance to the degree practical with emotional, social, family, and personal problems which impede the students potential to succeed in a community college environment
  • Long term counseling and complex problems are referred to agencies equipped to address this level of counseling and psychotherapy
  • Intervene, as needed, in the office, classroom, or a campus location, with a student in psychological distress. Counselor will assess, calm the situation, and manage the crisis
  • Provide counseling services within the scope of their training and/or refer students to the appropriate resources
  • Work in an environment that requires the highest level of integrity and ethics, innovative programs and ideas, teamwork, and a willingness to introduce and utilize cutting edge practices that support student success
  • Develop relationships that foster growth and interest in the field and are open to new and innovative ideas

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; (attach transcripts) OR
  • A Bachelors degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; (attach transcripts) AND A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline; (attach MFT license) OR
  • The equivalent

Minimum qualifications for Faculty and Administrators for California Community Colleges are established by the Chancellors Office.
