Role: Functional Safety Engineer
Location: Remote (must be US based)
Position Overview
We are seeking an entry-level Functional Safety Engineer to support the safety and reliability of our autonomous robotic vehicle systems. This role involves conducting hazard analysis, performing Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), supporting safety requirement development, and assisting in the implementation of safety measures throughout the product lifecycle.
The Functional Safety Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate safety into the design, development, verification, and validation of advanced technologies while ensuring adherence to relevant industry standards and regulatory frameworks.
Key ResponsibilitiesFunctional Safety & Risk Analysis- Contribute to the development of functional safety concepts and requirements for autonomous vehicle control systems.
- Perform safety analyses including STPA, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
- Support identification, assessment, and mitigation of functional safety risks.
Cross-Functional Collaboration- Work with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams to ensure proper allocation and implementation of safety requirements.
- Participate in safety verification and validation activities, including testing and simulation.
Compliance & Safety Standards- Ensure adherence to internal safety processes and workflows aligned with standards such as ISO 25119, ISO 13849, IEC 61508, and related regulations.
- Promote a culture of safety across the organization through communication, documentation, and daily engagement.
Documentation & Reporting- Prepare and maintain safety documentation, including safety plans, safety cases, hazard logs, and safety reports.
- Support internal and external safety audits and assessments.
- Summarize findings for leadership, customers, and regulatory bodies as needed.
Continuous Improvement- Stay current on developments in functional safety, autonomous systems, and relevant industry best practices.
- Provide guidance and technical input on functional safety matters to project teams.
Required QualificationsEducation- Bachelors degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Science, or a related field.
- Certifications such as CFSE, CFSP, AFSP, or Functional Safety Engineer credentials are highly preferred.
Experience- 03 years of experience in functional safety engineering, ideally within robotics, automotive, heavy machinery, mining equipment, or agricultural machinery.
- Hands-on experience with STPA is required.
Technical Skills- Strong understanding of functional safety standards and safety lifecycle processes.
- Basic proficiency with safety analysis methodologies including STPA, FMEA, and FTA.
- Knowledge of safety integrity levels (SIL/PL) and safety engineering frameworks.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex safety and compliance challenges.
