Functional Safety Engineer III
Location: Remote or Dallas–Fort Worth, TX
Job Type: Contract
Compensation: $30–$45/hour

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Functional Safety Engineer III to support the development and safety validation of advanced autonomous robotic vehicle systems. This role is focused on ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of complex automation and heavy equipment platforms throughout the product lifecycle.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in STPA methodologies, hazard analysis, and functional safety processes while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams across software, hardware, systems, testing, and leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform functional safety analyses including:
    • STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis)
    • FMEA (Failure Modes & Effects Analysis)
    • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Develop and support functional safety concepts, requirements, and architectures
  • Collaborate with hardware and software engineering teams to allocate and validate safety requirements
  • Review verification, validation, simulation, and testing activities for safety compliance
  • Support functional safety lifecycle management and compliance processes
  • Prepare and maintain safety documentation, reports, and safety cases
  • Participate in internal and external audits and compliance reviews
  • Provide technical guidance and best practices related to functional safety engineering
  • Ensure compliance with standards including:
    • ISO 25119
    • ISO 13849
    • IEC 61508
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Safety, Science, or related technical field
  • 8–12 years of functional safety engineering experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with STPA methodologies
  • Experience conducting FMEA and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
  • Solid understanding of:
    • Functional safety lifecycle processes
    • SIL concepts
    • Safety validation methodologies
  • Industry experience in one or more of the following:
    • Robotics
    • Autonomous vehicles
    • Mining equipment
    • Agricultural equipment
    • Heavy machinery
    • Industrial automation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working cross-functionally with multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Excellent technical documentation and reporting skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Functional safety certifications such as:
    • CFSE
    • CFSP
    • AFSP
  • Experience with autonomous vehicle or robotic systems
  • Exposure to safety testing and simulation environments
  • Experience presenting findings to leadership, customers, or regulatory bodies
  • Leadership, mentoring, or technical guidance experience
