FWS - Civic Action Team Specialist (Marketing and Communications)

Position Overview

The McCall Center for Civic Engagement (MCCE) is hiring a Civic Action Team Specialist who is specifically interested in marketing and communications. Civic Action Team Specialists (CATS) are an integral part of the Center, acting as the student face and workforce for all MCCE programs. The primary purpose of the CATS program is to give students the opportunity to serve the Pacific community and beyond in a way that connects academics and personal interests with civic engagement. This role will enjoy all of the core elements of the CATS program, with the addition of a specific focus on marketing and communications.

CATS combine their passions, skills, and personal interested by working together on civic engagement projects (e.g. service, advocacy, fundraising) both on campus and throughout the community. CATS also join their peers in non-partisan efforts to bring together members of the Pacific community with different perspectives, facilitating dialogue and problem-solving to address concerns and build community.

CATS work within the McCall Center for Civic Engagement under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Civic Engagement & Experiential Learning. Expectations

• Commit 4-6 hours/week for paid student employment in the McCall Center for Civic Engagement
• Attend weekly staff meetings, held on Tuesdays from 11:30am - 12:30pm
• Attend committee meetings, staff retreats, and staff gatherings (all organized around student schedules)
• Lead or co-lead at least one student-facing event or project per semester
• Attend at least one individual meeting with supervisor each month to discuss MCCE work, professional development, and academic connections
• Work as scheduled and maintain strong communication with supervisor regarding schedule variations and necessary absences
• Submit time cards accurately, completely, and on time

Duties & responsibilities

Please review the standard CATS job description and note that this particular hire will balance the standard role with ongoing responsibilities for planning, writing, and distributing marketing and communications materials on a variety of platforms including email, social media, and campus bulletin board/screens.

Required Qualifications

• Interest in civic engagement (e.g. service, advocacy, raising awareness, political involvement in elections/campaigns, activism, community-based research)
• Demonstrated commitment to civic engagement through past volunteering, coursework, student government, or other activities
• Good oral and written communication skills, with the ability to listen well
• Ability to work as a team member and give & take direction from others
• Interest in working with diverse student groups and community partners, including those with personal identities or perspectives different from your own
• Willingness to engage in civil discussion around controversial issues in our democracy, support a nonpartisan approach to promoting civic engagement, and actively participate in personal and team efforts to make our own communities more sustainable, equitable, and just
• Ability to act as a representative of the Center and university with self-awareness and diplomacy

Desired Qualifications

• Professional or volunteer experience writing emails, generating social media content and/or engaging in graphic design work
• Interest in generating excitement in others for civic engagement and social change
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn about promotion of civic engagement through campus-wide educational activities
• Demonstrated time management skills
• Inclination to take initiative and follow through on projects
