Job Specific Information: Carl Sandburg Learning Center is a small, public, elementary school dedicated to providing special education instruction to students with multiple disabilities. It is part of the Montgomery County Public School system and is located in Rockville, Maryland. Sandburg serves approximately 85 students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade in small classrooms of 5 to 10 students per teacher and para educator support. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:
Community schools provide a variety of wraparound services tailored to meet the needs of the students, families, and communities. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Community Schools, in collaboration with the elementary school principal, the Community School Liaison will plan and provide overall comprehensive support for the designated Community School. This position will be a part of the school''s leadership and support teams. The Community School Liaison will work with the school''s leadership team, school staff, community agencies, parents and other relevant stakeholders to develop a comprehensive needs assessment for the schools and strategic plan to support the community school focus of wrap-around services for students including (but not limed to): extended learning for students in out-of-school time opportunities, expansion of school-based health and wellness services for students, expansion of family engagement and support services for families, supports/programs to improve student attendance and training for school staff and community partners to successfully meet the community schools mission and vision. This position will work in a collaborative partnership between MCPS and MCEA. The Community School Liaison will meet the commitment to students by serving as an advocate, a role model, and a supporter of diversity (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, developmental differences, learning styles, and exceptionalities). This position will be evaluated by the school principals in coordination with the central office Supervisor of Community Schools. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to move around the building including stooping, bending, standing for extended periods and moving heavy objects. Crisis intervention may require participating in physical restraints. Required to plan and attend school meetings and events aligned with the Community School initiatives along with programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by MCEA contract.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of child development and learning. Working knowledge of Community Schools and the components mentioned above in supporting student learning and well-being. Commitment to the belief that all students can learn characterized by high content and high expectations for all learners. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities. Ability to engage with families and community organizations/agencies to support the Community Schools initiative. Knowledge about a variety of instructional and behavioral management strategies appropriate to the needs of students in community schools. Ability to self-reflect on instructional practices and personal interactions for continuous improvement. Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school-based staff, students, parents, and community organizations. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor''s degree from an accredited college or university required. Coursework in education, communication and counseling. Documented experience with program development and implementation. Experience in developing and facilitating professional development in the areas noted above for the Community Schools. Three years or more experience in community outreach and organizing preferred.CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland State Certification requirements in any relevant specialist certification area, such as social work, school counseling, pupil personnel worker, physical/occupational therapy, speech-language pathologist or teacher.
