Summary Description:
Under direction of the school principal, plans for and provides appropriate learning experiences in physical education for students with disabilities. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to develop physical and health literacy. Supervises students in movement settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Implements the Adapted Physical Education (APE)/Individualized Education Program (IEP) process through evaluation, delivery of APE services in the least-restrictive environment (LRE), and develops standards-based IEP goals for students receiving APE services. Communicates and interacts effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff members, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students to provide access to the physical education curriculum. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities. Physical Demands: Ability to move around the classroom including stooping, bending, standing for extended periods, and moving heavy objects. Special Requirements: Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavior management which include non-violent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to physically support behavioral and crisis interventions.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) physical education curriculum, special education and the IEP process, MCPS policies, and effective instructional practices to support individuals with a variety of disabilities. Understanding of the teaching/learning process. Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education. Ability to infuse technology into curriculum. Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school-based staff members, students, parents/guardians, and community. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
Education Training Experience:
Bachelors degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.Certificate License:Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements in appropriate field of education.
