    Position Description & Details

    First-Year Experience Learning Community Peer Mentors assist faculty in facilitating the UNIV 110 class. Peer Mentors attend every class; interact with students and FYE instructors; teach some components of UNIV 110; and lead group activities. Peer Mentors meet regularly with teaching team partners outside of class for class preparation. Mentors should expect to spend an average of 4 hours a week working on Peer Mentor duties. Attendance at Peer Mentor training will be required.

    Required Competencies

    Required:

    • Sophomore standing or above by the peer mentor semester.
    • Minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Interest in working as a teaching-team member with an UNIV 110 instructor.
    • Sensitivity to and interest in issues of diversity.
    • Enthusiasm for the university, its students, faculty, staff, academic and co-curricular life.
    • Commitment to encourage students to achieve MSU goals and ideals.
    • Knowledge of campus resources and events
    • Able to maintain confidentiality

    Necessary personal characteristics for this position include maturity, approachability, dependability, flexibility, good communication skills, ability to model appropriate behavior, and leadership and mentoring skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Previous participation in a FYE Learning Community preferred, but not required.
