    SUMMARY

    The Gallery and Collections GANT position is designed for graduate students with an interest in art, museum collections, galleries, and community outreach to aid the Director of Galleries and Collections as part of the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts. The position may require evening and weekend hours.

    REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS OF EMPLOYEE

    ·      Must have full or conditional admission into a graduate program, and must be in good standing

    ·      Possess an overall graduate GPA of at least 3.00 for all courses completed

    ·      Must be registered during the academic term of assistantship, and maintain a minimum of 3.00 GPA

    ·      Graduate students whose native language is other than English must demonstrate a sufficient level of oral and written proficiency before being awarded the position

    ·      Adheres to College Policy and Procedures

    ·      Performs duties as workload requires

    ·      Maintains a positive and respectful attitude

    ·      Communicates regularly with supervisor

    ·      Demonstrates flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload

    ·      Consistently reports to work on time prepared to perform duties of position

    ·      Meets College productivity standards

    ·      Maintains confidentiality

    ·      Supervises student workers and work study students working for the galleries

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    ·      20 hours per week, to be considered full-time Graduate Assistant Non-Teaching

    ·      Greet and answer any questions from guests

    ·      Track daily attendance and collect zip code data from our visitors

    ·      Maintain general cleanliness of gallery space

    ·      Aid in installation and de‐installation, which includes unpacking and packing of artwork, completing condition reports for incoming and outgoing artwork, and the hanging of artwork in the galleries

    ·      Preparing gallery space for exhibition, including any needed repairs, sanding and painting of gallery walls

    ·      Maintaining gallery space during exhibitions

    ·      Input data into various spreadsheets or databases

    ·      Copy materials as requested

    ·      File appropriate paperwork

    ·      Transport and retrieve materials to other campus locations

    ·    Assisting with scheduling and facilitating field trips and group tours

    ·      Other duties as assigned

    SPECIAL EVENTS/PROJECTS

    Gallery GANTs may be asked to monitor an opening reception during the day or evening, including set-up and take-down. The Gallery GANT may aid artists during exhibition installation and de-installation. These tasks may include heavy lifting and moving of objects, using power tools and light machinery, installing and hanging material, moving pedestals, patching and painting, printing and hanging wall text and labels, and preparing marketing material. Along with the daily duties of monitoring the gallery spaces, the Assistant may have additional special projects. Examples of such projects include designing marketing and social media materials, practicing museum standards for collection care, basic database upkeep, or photographing the collection and exhibits.

    ·      Education and / or Experience – Currently enrolled East Texas A&M University graduate student.

    ·      Communication / Language ‐‐Requires effective oral and written communication skills, and basic interpersonal skills. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‐on‐one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

    ·      Quantitative ‐‐Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    ·      Reasoning ‐‐Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    ·      Computer Literacy / General Office Equipment – Though this position does not require specific computer program knowledge, proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Suite is a plus. Ability to operate facsimile, scanning, and copy machines.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Occasionally:

    ·         Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl

    ·         Climb or balance

    ·         Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds  

    SUPERVISOR

    The Gallery GANTs report directly to the Director of Galleries and Museums. In the event that the Director is unavailable, Gallery GAs report to the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts.

    Salary: $4000.00 per semester for full-time assistantship

    All positions are security-sensitive.
