Description

GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT

GARAGE ATTENDANT

Under general supervision, assists in and around a garage; performs general preventive maintenance on and is responsible for lubricating and washing automotive equipment.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs complete lubrications to automobiles and trucks.
  • Inspects batteries in automotive equipment for proper water level and tires for proper air pressure.
  • Changes tires, flushes and services radiators for winter driving.
  • Cleans automotive parts.
  • Cleans, washes and polishes automobiles and trucks.
  • Reports to superior any defects observed while cleaning and keeps wash rack clean.
  • Moves and places automotive equipment in garage.
  • Places drums of oil and other materials in racks.
  • Transports and moves material around garage.
  • Removes snow from driveways.
  • Assists repair workers in lifting heavy automotive parts.
  • Sweeps and cleans garage floors and washes garage windows.
  • Services automotive equipment with gasoline and oil.
  • Drives automobiles or trucks making emergency service calls such as investigating reports relative to water service or installation of safeguards for protection of the public, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of two years of high school. High school graduation or GED preferred.
  • One year of experience in lubricating and washing automotive equipment is preferred.

Licensing and Certifications

  • Valid State of Michigan Operator License required at time of application. Persons subsequently hired in this title shall be required to obtain a State of Michigan Chauffeurs License with a Class 1 or 2 endorsement, or, a Commercial Driver License with a Group A endorsement and airbrake qualification. (In addition, P endorsement required for placement in the Department of Transportation).
  • Successful applicants must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division and must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiners Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act-1988

Equivalency

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

  • Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
  • In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
  • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
