Description

This is a non-exempt position, which is responsible technical work in the execution of skilled mechanical work and operation of the Citys equipment maintenance and automotive repair garage.

Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Examples of Duties

Assigns and supervises the work of mechanics, garage attendants, chauffeurs, and truck drivers; provides guidance, leadership and training to subordinates and others who may be part of a program geared towards developing technical skills.

Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email and database software in performing work assignments;

Performs all types of repair work on automotive equipment , including relining brakes, removing transmissions, repairing electrical systems, rebuilding engines, changing and balancing tires, repairing and replacing air conditioning units, repairing and replacing exhaust systems, and various other related mechanical duties.

Performs advanced diagnostic test, repairs, and major overhaul of automobiles, trucks, and a wide variety of specialized departmental equipment.

Understands, and keeps abreast of and complies with federal, state and local regulations that affect service operations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know etc.

Understands and ensures compliance with manufacturer warranty and policy procedures.

Ensures that all repairs are assigned to technicians in an equal and fair manner.

Provides technical support for technicians when necessary.

Checks progress of each repair order throughout the day and reports back to supervisor.

Maintains high-quality service repairs and minimizes comebacks. Conducts periodic spot checks of completed jobs for thoroughness and quality.

Monitors technicians daily productivity and work order completion.

Monitors shop condition, including cleanliness, safety and the condition of shop equipment. Reports problems to the service manager or dealer.

Ensures the proper care, storage and inventory of special tools.

Keeps abreast of new equipment and tools available and recommends purchases.

Fills in for Supervisor when necessary.

Attends managers meetings as requested.

Strives for harmony and teamwork within the department and with all other departments.

Maintains safe work environment.

Maintains professional appearance.

Completes other tasks as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of maintenance, repair, alteration and construction procedures and practices.

Knowledge of the materials, tools and equipment used in general building maintenance and repair work.

Knowledge of modern methods of personnel supervision and management.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to maintenance and construction work.

Ability to comprehend and interpret plans and specifications and to direct work accordingly.

Ability to direct the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers in a variety of construction trades.

Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with departmental officials, other employees, and the general public.

Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

Skill in the use, operation and care of tools and equipment necessary in special projects.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school; Five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (Or obtain as the discretion of Public Works Director)

IMAC Automotive Air Conditioning certification (Or obtain as the discretion of Public Works Director)

Valid State of Florida CDL Class A (Or obtain as the discretion of Public Works Director)

Acquire National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100C, IS-700D, IS-200C IS-800D at the discretion of Public Works Director.

Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, lift and/or carry and push/pull various objects.
