Job Description/Summary:

The Assistant Gardener assists in the development, maintenance and harvesting of the medicinal garden. This individual will work with the other Assistant Gardeners and will take direction from the Lead Gardener and Garden Supervisor.

The Assistant Gardener is responsible for the following:

  1. Water plants as needed (1 to 5 times weekly) depending on season and planting cycle.
  2. Maintain medicinal beds and plants including: planting, weeding, periodic staking, clearing annual beds, amending, pruning, transplanting, re-seeding, and placing name tags.
  3. Harvest medicinal plants as appropriate including: garbling, drying and storage of plant medicines.
  4. Run periodic errands to garden supply centers as needed.
  5. Assist with annual fall amending and planting weekend including: plant orders, purchases, task assignments, supervision support for 2 dozen (or more) volunteer workers.
  6. Assist with early spring garden preparation for the Southwest Conference on Botanical medicine or any outdoor presentations in the medicinal garden area; many and various tasks required for preparation.
  7. Communicate weekly with supervisor for direction, feedback, task completion, goal setting.
  8. Lead garden tours periodically.
  9. Assist with supervision and guidance of volunteer garden workers.
  10. Maintain a positive work environment by promoting an atmosphere of cooperation with volunteers, students, peers, faculty and administration.


Experience Required

At least some previous gardening experience helpful, and a desire to work with medicinal plants.

Working Environment

Garden activities are completed in the Medicinal Garden and Garden prep room inside the Academic Building. This job will require outside work in all seasons/temperatures as well as frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling of up to 25 pounds. Working as a team and taking direction are essential.
